Hey all,

I want to lower my car, so it not only looks good but get some stiffer s**t going to cut down body roll a little, drifting is too unsafe atm 8-).

Suspension is something I know nothing about, and I want to do it properly. So any help would be good.

BTW i'd like superlow height, and a firm ride doesn't bother me - must cut out bodyroll!

Mate you live in Lilydale you will tear the bottom off your car within weeks. You should have seen my poor exhaust etc.
You don't need to lower drastically to improve handling. What you need is stiffer springs and struts, thicker roll bars front and rear. And make sure all the bushes are firm. Personally I would only go max 1.5" lower or about the same as XR6.
You will also need adjustable camber kits when lowering.

pfft. I don't do dirt roads :p, and it's already xr6 height, given it's an xr6 :p.
wtf is a camber kit, where does it go and what does it do? :p

When the car is lowered, the front wheels are not straight and level any more. A wheel alignment for the new height is needed, but often you cant fully correct the camber/castor because the car was not designed to go so low. A camber/castor kit extends the amount the wheels can be aligned so you dont chew your tires out.

I think XR's have got enough room not to need them.

I know this doesn't help, but the stock suspension on my XR6 is awesome. There is virtually no body roll (less than a BA XR6T, in fact) and nice, big slides are easily and safely pulled off (when conditions prevale of course :wink: )

Start messing about (and if you or someone else F**k it up) and you could end up in dire.

For example, my mate has an EF Futura (5 speed :) ) which was, apparently, proffesionally lowered and he took a corner at medium pace and the thing just went feral. The a** flicked out instantly and he hit the gutter, knocking his diff to the right about 5-10mm.

Im interested in this to, can someone explain a bit more about the camber/castor kit. Mine is already lowered with superlows and the front tyres are nearly bald on the inside and they've only done about 15000km. Do you need to put shims behind the upper control arms or somthing to straiten the wheels back up?

yep thats exactly what a camber kit does, shims out the uper control arm.
this pushes the top edge of the wheel outward making it stand up straigh and allows for even tire wear,,
castor is adjusted by shimming the back half of the control arm differently to the fron which changes the angle of the steering arm geometry, changing how quickly the wheel will return to centre and how the car turns in.

so is there a specific amount of spacers for each different model or do all models get the same spacing and it just depends on how low you go? where do you get the spacers from? All i seem to be able to find is whiteline.

It depends on how 'out' your camber is, to how many shims you will need.

If you want your EL to handle, and I mean handle, consider a whiteline kit.
I've got their springs, shocks, and swaybars...
I recommend 'em.
P.S. if you don't want bodyroll, don't even think about not doing swaybars...

The stock EF XR's suspension is plenty stable enough, just sounds like you need a bit more practice to do it a bit smoother.

If both sides are feathering/wearing on the inner of the tyre its more likely to have "toe out". If it had toe in it would be the outer of the tyres wearing.

It's an EL XR for starters... and no, it's too soft, it's better than a stock falcon but still has some improving to do.

hey downingj dont forget your car has the rear end trailing arm revision that tickford engineered into the ef xrs, and that ford engineered into the whole el range..

it makes the rear end alot more stable.

soulfire,

im probably going for kings lows, with heavy duty ones on the rear.. adj sway bar on front and using the koni yellows ive already got.. plus shim type camber kit. gonna see how that goes; the stiff rear springs will give it an oversteery feel so theres no real need for swaybar unless i find alot of lateral movement. plus the oversteering tendancy might be pulled out a bit by tightening the front end up.. reason for only going for lows, is coz we got steep driveway, plus i dont mind the equiv-to-xr height and coz its got the kit anyway it looks lowish as it is..

also, ive got simmons rims on my car and i think the offset is slightly off, ie the wheels are pushed too far out. i need guards rolled aswell. and having the car up a bit higher will prevent tyres gettin chopped and guards gettin hit..
