Gday blokes im in the middle of an el-xh motor change over( just motor no box), i took the motor n box out whole in the el and i was wondering if it would be easier to do the same to the xh and bolt up the box to the motor while its outside the car? note: i hit the front end with the grinder to get it out of the el/ef so would i even be able to do it to the xh without wrecking the front. cheers blokes

It's easy enough eithier way, I prefer to do it on the ground, yes you can take the motor and box out whole from the XH, just need to lift the motor from close to the front to get some decent angle on it. If you choose to do it with the box in the car, put a bit of grease on the engine mounts and the spigot on the torque converter, makes it go in a bit easier.

Oh right might take the whole lot out. do u think it would quicker take in it out whole? when i disconnect the box from the motor outside the car do i need to put markings on it where the teeth where or anything? im tryn to get it right first time without f*cking it up lol cheers bloke

as long as your getting a big angle it will be easier to drop the lot in, provided you have the front of the car up high aswell so that you can drop the gear box in on a crazy angle to clear everything, i tryed dropping the lot in but was doing it off a block and tackle in my garage with little head room so i couldnt have the front of the car raised enough and had to drop it in seperate and bolt the gear box up later and next time im definatly using an engine crane outside or a shed with more headroom

Oh true didnt thin of that, well its outside so head room is no issue, the front is up on blocks about 4-500mm off the ground do you think this will be enough?

Ummm, it is actually much easier to raise the BACK of the car to remove the engine.
This will mean the angle of the engine and box compared to the car will be greater. Have done this a few times now. Oh, and use a piece of board to sit where the rad would normally be to protect your A/C condenser. The harmonic balancer can slide along it without damaging anything and then as the engine clears the top of the rad support, the board can be slid up horizontally under the sump and gearbox. {USERNAME} wrote: get a gearbox slip yolk too, otherwise you'll be cleaning all the oil up, My luck I had the oil mostly go down the disconnected exhaust so I did not have a lot of cleaning up to do.... Be careful of the brake lines (assuming they are the same position as E series).
