Hey guys just got my car back from the mechanic he told me it was the diff that is stuffed so i need to take it into town to get fixed. They said it will be a maximum of $700-$800, depending on what gears are stuffed.

Can different gears fit into my housing? say 3.9:1 or something? woud it be worth it? Cost much more? (i dont have a clue)

shouldnt cost anymore to get whatever ratio you want (if gears have to be replaced anyway) that price includes an LSD centre too doesnt it?

all i know is that they can do whatever hey need to without taking out the diff, apparenlty they just open up the housing and work from there. it is going into a place down fyns st so hopefully it will be ready asap.

Yeah you dont need to take the diff out. I converted mine from SS to LSD with the diff in the car still. That price does seem a bit steep, you could get an LSD conversion for that I'm sure

The crown & pinion are the gears that are changed to change the ratio in diff. Its very rare that the crown & pinion is replaced due to damage....these are the 2 large gears that turns the diff centre...the crown is bolted to the hemisphere & the pinion is pretty much on the other side of the tail shaft....when a diff is rebuilt, they rebuild the stuff inside the hemisphere (and the carrier bearings)..the cones & clutches are replaced (if needed) & the spider gears or side gears are replaced (if needed) )& repalce all the other littled fiddly s**t), but their the main components....i was quoted about $500 extra for a new 4.11 crown & pinion (these gears MUST be replaced as a set)

Yeah i would've thought that $700 is aropund the right price, for a new LSD with whatever gears you were after.
