Hey, today im working on a EL Auto transmission that's going in my car, and I have an old EF auto in the backyard with the dipstick.

Is it possible or difficult to fit the Dipstick that the EF's transmissions had onto an EL Transmission don't have the dipstick from factory?

You can do it, a lot of people used to but why would you? If the trans isn't leaking you won't lose heaps of oil. I have an AU and I never bother. I do a change of oil and just fill it up through the plug on the drivers side of the trans.

I'd like to know how it's done, as the autos run a different main case, and there doesn't seem to be an area to drill the EL/AU/BA case for it.

Gab

EDIT: Not saying it can't be done, just saying I'd like to know how

I think I read somewhere that altho there's no external sign of where to put the hole, with the pan off you can see where it's meant to be - so you drill from the inside and fit the earlier dipstick tube etc.

if that's possible, wouldn't you want to remove the whole valve body, clutches, planetary gears and everything else to avoid getting any shards of metal into nasty places?

I'm not sure - keep in mind you're drilling upward from the inside - so shavings should just fall clear - and if it's necessary to move anything I think it'll be only the valve body. I was under the impression even that wasn't necessary - but I'm going from things I've read - not first hand info...

There were some threads on this many moons ago - IIRC it's easiest to do with the trans out, and upside down, and apparently the casting on the case is still there on the BTR93 autos.

20,000 km, OR 2 years, is recommended......a tranny thats done 100,000 km without servicing, usually has a noisy planetry gear set....just have to listen to some cabs trannies.

I put a ef dip stick into my au gearbox in my ef futura, just need a 16mm steel drill bit, some gease, box out and upside down, pan off and you will see where to drill inside, then need to drill a small hole and tap it for the lock down clamp!
