I'm planning to swap the EA Rear Upper Trailing Arms for those from an EDXR6. As the XR6 arms are shorter than the standard ones, I need to drill an extra hole (on each side of the diff assembly?).
Can someone give me dimensions to locate the new bolt holes, and possibly a photo of where they are measuring from? Thanks

From what I thought the arms were wider too than the EA ones and wont fit in the EA provisions? Or is this only the lower arms that are like this? I can't remember now...

the lower arm bushes are narrower in ea,
but the top ones are the same length and width from ea-ef. the only difference is the ed xr6 arms have a semi circle cut out to clear the axle tube to allow for the different mounting point on the xr diff (2 bolt holes).. |

Thanks for the info Troy. I found this photo from another thread (courtesy of cjh). Another question.....would I be able to do this with an EA diff and fit EDXR6 or ELXR6 arms?
I gather the bottom holes are for the XR6.

yep...
that diff in the pic is an el xr one though... the ed xr has only 2 hole positions and afaik on the ed the xr8 and sprint use the lower hole, but it depends on how your pinion angle is... mine are currently in the top holes and my pinion angle is straight, |

EBII and ED have the wide bushes ( lower arms)...XF and EA have the narrow bushes....not sure what series 1 EB had.
I have EA lower arms in my ED. I also added side bracing on the lower brackets. The bushes are SuperPro with homemade alloy spacers with s/s inserts pressed in.

cjh, that's some fancy engineering work there. As most suspension/brake places thumb their nose at EA components, was there a reason you used the EA lower arms instead of ED arms?

I chose them for the amount of surface area the bush has, and is flat to go with it, and they are very ridigid compared to the original bushes. With the OE bushes, the back end felt like a wet sponge. There really isn't a lot of rubber keeping the bush together, but, they are made for the comfort, and not much chop for handling.

I just measured the standard upper trailing arm on my car (EA Series 2) and it looks like the distance between the bolts is 340mm. Looking under the car, the tailshaft appears to be running almost straight with the pinion. If the longer trailing arms are to compensate for the lower XR ride height (which I have), would replacing the standard arms be a waste of time?
I'm basing this on the following thread: gearbox-suspension-brake-driveline-f4/el-xr6-upper-trailing-arm-to-diff-photos-t74968.html Another question.....can anyone confirm that the EA upper rear trailing arms on the Series 2 are 340mm between centres? If arms are only to adjust the pinion angle, I suppose it's not much point putting them on.

they don't just adjust pinion angle.
google "4 link instant centres", the angle of the arms in relation to each other changes the way the rear end behaves. having said i always just put XR stuff in on the assumption that tickford knew what they were doing back then. always seemed to work

I still haven't got any feedback about locating the holes. Someone must have an EDXR6 they can measure. Did they have more than one set of holes on the diff like the EF/ELs? Otherwise, I'll have to track one down at the wreckers and trace the hole locations off it.

yeah they got multiple holes.
they are tricky to drill, you really want a low profile air drill to do it, anything else is almost impossible beacause everything gets in the way. i've done it twice putting EF diffs into the same EL (don't ask), and i wouldn't do it again. probably cause we (the others would say me ) f**k up both times. i thought i had some pics on my photobucket of the ED XR diff arm mounts but i dont, i'll try remember to grab some for you when i get home, i got a housing or two laying around.

Many thanks Steady ED. Do you normally remove the back brakes, or just drill through from the other side? I've got a feeling I've got ELXR6 arms but, from reading some other threads, they're much the same as the EDXR6 arms.
