Hey im about to fit a tranny cooler to my ef but im not 100% sure what to do. I remember there used to be a good tutorial with pictures somewhere but i cant find it anywhere. Does anybody have a tutorial or can tell me which line off the coolant tank is the return line? Any help would be great

Just cut a peice out of one of the metal tranny line, whack a hose on either end (special tranny fluid hose), and run to the cooler. Work out weather the return hose goes to the top or bottom of the cooelr.

Righto, i just need to know which metal hose from the radiator is the return hose and im fine.

I'd be saying the bottom is the return hose as the top one would need to have the fluid pumped up to it. And hot stuff rises, so having the hot fluid at the top being put back into the box wouldn';t be such a crash hot idea...

hot oil goes into the top line of the rad
and cooler oil comes out the bottom same as the coolant!

Its the other way round... Hot fluid is pumped through the lower pipe, and comes out the top pipe back into the trans.

The factory cooler is placed between the radiator and trans return line.

So when I fitted mine, I cat the upper pipe about 20cm fron the top, and cut the other end where it starts to go straight without bends. Slip some tranny hose and clamps over the ends and put the cooler in between. Oh, and the front bar has to come off as well.

I installed a new factory cooler onto mine, as thats the only cooler that will fit under a Fairmont front bumper. $145 for the kit from Bursons.

No idea whatsoever... They must have had a reason for it.

Unless every Ford manual, literature and diagram I have seen regarding this is wrong.

Spot on. The one I installed in my EA was connected to the top pipe and the EL's factory installed one is also.

Theres been much argument as to which side of the trans to put a cooler.

Doing it Fords way, its cooling the oil after its been through the radiator, most likely dropping the temperature of the oil from its optimum level.

Doing it the other way, its cooling the oil before entering the radiator, only to be heated up again as it enters the radiator.

Most would argue that the second option is the better, as it keeps the oil at the correct temperature most of the time.

However, I see it that Ford has invested mega $$$ into development of these things, and they probably know best. As well as Ford warranting their cars with a 2300kg tow load if setup this way. So I suppose there is something in it.

yer good point adrian but hell

why would u cool oil down then re heat it? thats stupid :)

and is it not a better option to have cooler oil? as it makes the trann last a s**t longer?

I would think like you. Why cool it and reheat it.

But from the explaination for this from "experts", the trans (like an engine and its fluids) is designed to run perfectly at a certain temp. Using the trans cooler in the radiator helps to warm the fluid quickly, as well as maintain the fluid at its 90 or so degree operating temp. So the cooler would cool any overly hot fluid to a temp below the radiator, then the radiator would reheat it to the optimum temp. This is the expert explaination.

But either way, Ford seem to do the opposite for some reason.

And interesting side fact on this as well. You know how the new BF 6 Speed autos run a heat exchanger, rather than using the radiator to cool the fluid. Ford say this is a first in Oz, blah, blah, we are good because we've done something different. Its a PR spin really. The ZF boxes have a normal running temp of 80 to 90 degrees. However, the BA's running temp is in the 93 to 95 degree range. ZF refused to warrant the boxes if Ford set them up in this fashion, so they installed these fantastic heat exchangers and made a s**t PR spin to say how good they are... :D

But I suppose in the end, it means that these auto boxes have a maximum running temp, as well as an expected normal operating temp for them to run at their optimum.
