Anyone fit a short shifter without taking the box out? can you get the clearance by undoing the supports and lowering it on a jack?

no need to remove.
IIRC you don't even need to remove the tail shaft.

as you stated, dropping the rear engine mount should give you enough clearance.

Awesome! I was truly lamenting the idea of moving it from one car to the other if I had to pull both boxes.

Just by dropping it a few inches you can get access from the top.

doesn't take long to remove the entire box anyways! best thing about our T5's and external bolted bell housings!
