Sick of your 5 speed gearbox having the uber-s**t gearshift feel?
I can't help the crap feel of the cable clutch at this stage but I ripped out the rubber insulator between the gear lever and the shift mechanism in the gearbox and it has made a WORLD of difference, it's simply amazing. The gearshift is now almost as good as most japanese gearboxes, it makes the car feel quite nice to drive! I initially thought it was just my box so I rung a mate and got him to do it on his EL and he rings me back 2 hours later saying what a fantastic change it made! You have to add a few washers to each 10mm bolt to space it out due to removing the insulator but thats about it! 15 mins of work and the car feels almost as good as japanese gearboxes.... I actually enjoyed driving it this arvo! In short: Do it! The negatives - the NVH from the engine is transmitted more to your hand, if you rest your hand on the shift lever, it may get a bit sore after 30 mins of driving.... |

not being familiar with the manual box which is why i ask this question, is there any reason you cannot put it back in if you don't like it? |

you could probably get the rubber insulator copied onto nylon of the same thickness, should increase shift feel,and still have some vibration absorbtion qualities

whats wrong with the feel of the shift in the first place?
and dont say uber s**t. and with your clutch cable worries you could always go hydrolic

timmeh, yeah you can just put the rubber insulator back in if you choose to want the rubbery sloppy poor feel again.
dvyvan, the T5 shift is uber s**t. Actually, its worse. Please tell me a RWD 5 speed gearbox made in the last 15 years with a worse shift than the borg warner T5. Over the past 25 years the only worse gearbox I can think of is the aussie 4 speed. With the clutch cable issues, I said I dont have a solution yet. I'm working on it. |

I'm quite thinking of doing this, for the moment i'm quite enjoying a very solid and firm shift rather than sloppy seconds. |

I actually dont have any worries with my t5 after i got the shifer pivot replaced. Used to be sloppy now its like a virgin again.

i put the rubber back on on mine it sounds real noisy and feels notchy without it i personally didnt like it
i was hoping this thread had good news about making the box stronger or there was a cheap short throw shifter around i go really excited

The operation is reversible if you dont like it. Personally I love it, coming from owning manual japanese cars for almost 10 years, it's bringing back memories of enjoyable driving! Its not a worn shift pivot symptom. That is sloppiness without tension, the rubber insulator is sloppiness with a little tension, competely different feeling. |

which is exactly why I like it. My GF who is learning manual now also thinks its much much nicer.... Then again each to their own, surely many may not like it, I just dont know why... |

Nylong might still be a bit stiff, anyone know if nolothane is available in sheet form that would probably be perfect

Nylong might still be a bit stiff, anyone know if nolothane is available in sheet form that would probably be perfect nolathane is just a brand name your looking for sheets of polyurethane. and i'm sure if you try one of the rubber shops around you'll find some thing that is very close to what you want |

I've got a Tremec T5 sitting at home (out of an XR6T) and long and behold - shift insulator is a hard plastic material, not rubber.

can a tremec 5 speed be bolted to a ef i6 with different bel housing
