Ive been having a look at maybe doing a 9" conversion on my XR8. I want to source all the parts myself, then get someone local to put it all together for me and do the conversion on the housing.
Firstly, has anyone on here done this. I'd like to know a complete list of parts that are required and how to go about working out which axles to order, or whether they need to be custom made, as I want to retain the ABS. If I do this, I'll be getting a Detroit Truetac with 3.7gears. With the gears, there are a couple of options for the pinion spline count - 28 & 35. I would assume the 35 is the stronger option, but is it necessary? Would I be right in thinking that 28 would be fine until you start making s**t amounts of power that is normally only seen in dedicated drag cars and the like? When speaking to a local shop yesterday, they said that Moser were the only ones who did an axle to suit ABS because they had an extra groove or something in it? Does anyone know about this? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Chad

Yeah, the only problem is that he's all the way in Sydney and I'm trying to do it so I don't get ripped on the parts. An example is the Truetrac centre. I can get one from Summit for US$480 when over here the better of the diff joints is charging $2300 for the same thing! A full 9" conversion I've been quoted $4200. So, if I can save $1500 on the centre and whatever on anything else I can source myself, it shouldn't be too bad in the end.
I might give that guy in Sydney a buzz though and see if he can tell me which axles I need to get to suit ABS. I haven't bought that car yet. Still waiting on the spec sheet. Went see the engine builder at his work today and he left it at home. Hopefully he remembers tonight.

Cheers mate. I made an error before, as the centre price quoted included truetrac, gears, case and bearings. But still, should be able to do it a lot cheaper.

It may pay to speak to Fritzz, IIRC he used a strange 9" centre with EL axle tubes welded on.

You should talk to Phil at Final Drive, (www.finaldrive.com.au) he will look after you. What he doesnt know about diffs, especially 9" fords and BW/BTR's isnt worth knowing. You may find you do not need a 9", but he can advise you about that stuff.
Good luck.

Yeah, I spoke to Phil about the standard diff and options for it, which he said were really none. Told me to go speak to WA Diffs as he only really knows 9".
I've also been in contact with fritzz, so hopefully he can give me some ideas.

I'm trying to do it more for value and strength. If I stick to the stock diff I can get a Truetrac centre at a cost of $1540, then have to get it installed and would want to get some axles that are up to par as well. I reckon I'd be looking at $3000 all up, maybe more. That's only $1200 shy of a drive in, drive out 9" conversion here.
With a 9", I can get the truetrac centre from Summit for US$480, gears for around US$200 and I'm sure whatever else I'll need will be considerably cheaper than what I'd be charged here. The actual housing is probably all I'd need to get here and get it converted and put together. The axles are really the only tricky bit at this stage. I've got to find out if the Moser axles that are used are off the shelf or are custom made.

are you set on the truetrac or would you be happy with a clutch type LSD?
reason i ask is i just ordered a KAAZ centre for mine (DAG-3820), 1245 delivered. i'm guessing the 31 spline version (DAG-3830) would be the same/similar cost, then it'd just be a matter of getting 31 spline axles made up, i seem to recall a bloke on here had some 31spline axles made up for his spooled borgy, and it was around $900? ...just searched, http://www.fordmods.com/gearbox-suspension-brake-driveline-f4/3-9-gears-t72405.html?hilit=%2031%20spline, wholohan123 mentions $950 for 31spline billet axles to suit a borgy from G&J Diffs here in melbourne. if you'd be happy with the KAAZ i reckon thats a cheaper option then going the 9", also gonna sap less power. but if you do go 9" and stick to a 28spline centre, i've read that the bw axles fit (obviously never tried that myself so you'd want to confirm ). that'd help keep costs down if you are happy with 28spline?

What about Rollin's 31 Spline AP Axles? IIRC he payed around $1100 for 2 axles and side gears resplined.

Well, I've just been down to chat to my mechanic and he's talked some sense into me. For what I want, the 9" is just overkill. I'm not going to be running 10s or anything like that and as you just said ED, it'll be sapping power. I did look at the KAAZ 1st and got a price of 1850 fitted, or there-abouts. Is that the only difference between the 3820 and 3830, the spline count? The other option on my list was to go with the Harrop Truetrac but that's $1540 delivered.
He's suggested I just go with a full spool with 31 spline axles and spend the rest of the money on rebuilding the box. Not too sure about the full spool idea though.

Kaaz sounds like a good option
I wonder when u compare like for like with 9 inch in regards to 28 spine axles what is stronger??? I know some vl's out here in Sydney running standard axels but have been shot peened and chriogenic and running big hp through then with no issues.
