I have had a wheel alignment done all around on EF Station Wagon variety. The front tyres are wearing remarkably quickly on the outside of the wheel.
I do carry large loads, being a builder with all the tools in the car... Could over inflation of the front wheels cause this, or are my shocks totally phucked?!! I wouldn't normally care that much as have been putting cheap rubber on ($130 a tyre) but am looking at getting fatter tread and would hate for the whole thing to go pear shaped. !

It's not from being over loaded or over inflated.
The Tow is set wrong. Dodgy alignment. |

$130 a tyre on 15"s?? is not cheap....
over inflation will cause the centre to wear. |

check to see if the inside is wearing at the same rate as the outside? if so could be under inflated tyres...

well when my power steering rack s**t itself my tyres wore uneavenly infact i chewed 500 dollars worth of khumos in 6months
 but i would defiatly be getting them to check they did the alignment properly

I would, once again, like to thanks everyone at FORDMODS for helping out the mechanically unsuitable with yet another request that would drive most to the drink.
So, general consensus is DODGY WHEEL ALIGNMENT, which is what I was suspecting myself (and was hoping for!)... The wheel bearings are fine (although could put new left on shortly.......) Ho hum. 
I did ride motorbikes a lot (fast) and thus tend to push the car around a little... If the alignment is at factory setting and the tyres are being worn on outside then surely a bit more tow would be okay anyway?  Hey - Is TOW IN when the top of the wheel is in further than the bottom, or is that TOW OUT?!

Negative camber is the tops angling in, positive camber is the opposite. Toe is the angle of the tyres if you are looking from ABOVE the car. Toe in is the front of the tyre angled in, toe out the opposite. A bit more negative camber if you drive hard can help prevent outer edge wear. But you have to drive pretty hard to f**k an outer edge when the rest of the tyre is still fine. Front wheel alignments are generally under $50 anyway, good piece of mind.

One of the biggest problem i had with my previous EL. the outer edge gets bald just before the middle part reaches 50% wear. I went to Fury Ford and they fixed it by adding shims into the camber. After that the front wheel looks far better than the factory spec camber angle.

I guess either -- the factory spec (for whatever reason) isn't working with the rim / tyre / suspension / load of the specific car -- the d***head at Firestone who use rattle guns to put wheels on stuffed up the alignment. I seem to remember the alignment wasn't far out and only needed a slight adjustment. I think I am going to have to find a new tyre crew as this is very dissapointing. Thanks to FordMods I now know that wheel nuts have a torque rating (and therefore doing them up with a rattle gun can cause excessive brake disk wear). Hmmmppph! Got some newer mag wheels turning up sometime shortly. The are still 15" so may put the 215, 60, r15 tyres from my Fairmont and Subaru onto them and start from scratch. Am taking the disks off the Fairmont, getting them machined and put onto the Futura, so may as well start at wheel bearings and work the whole way through to tyres... And, hopefully, a different tyre outfit will listen to my problem with the old ones and put some extra camber on for me..... Although, this whole plan may come unstuck by the simple fact I havn't seen the mag wheels I bought from TRADEME and they may not be 6.5" or 7" wide to take the 215's. Silly me, forgot to even check before bidding. Dumb a***! |

hooking it into corners will wear outsides first.
If you drive sensibly though, get alignment checked out before anything else.

I previously posted here but maybe the server change nuked it.
I once loaded up my XG in a way that raised the front. I found that doing so increased the toe-in, which scrubbed the outside of the tyres. EF's have different front end geometry though.
