I think im tracking a thrust bearing on the clutch, wondering if someone can confirm?
in neutral, theres a cyclical noise from the gearbox like grinding. pushing the clutch down makes it go away. it still makes the noise in 1st > 4th 5th doesn't (all at speed) I still have drive in all gears. Cheers guys.

probally because your mum cant get to the gear stick when its in 5th

Cheers guys. have you checked the oil in the box lately?? sounds like it could be a noisy input shaft bearing.?? |

yah sounds like the thrust bearing. my ghia did it too before i replaced the thrust bearing.... put in a new one and its all gone.

mine does the same. but only in 5th, and its only very quiet. doesn't do it in neutral either

it'd definately the input shaft bearing. the thrust bearing has no load when your foot is off the clutch. so to be a noisy thrust bearing it'd be noisy when your foot is on the clutch not off

cool, thanks for the info guys. Lets say for the sake of the argument its the input bearing, does it involve pulling the box down or is it like replacing the seal on the output shaft or around the harmonic ballancer? (eg pop it out from the front and replace)

(eg pop it out from the front and replace) I think it involves removing the box, removing the input shaft (4 or 5 bolts?), pull shaft out, replace bearing and put everything back together. Let's hope it is a self contained bearing in your box...if it isn't, expect a lot of rollers dropping out.

Just for reference, before my thrust bearing blew up it made a squeaky sound of noise not a grinding noise.
I just ignored it and I was lucky I was about 3km away from home in peak hour traffic when my thrust bearing shot itself to pieces and I had to drive home with no clutch. Easier to replace than an input shaft bearing, so replace it anyway when you have it out.

so if mines making at rattling noise in neutral that goes away with your foot pressed down on the clutch its the input or thrust bearing?
