My automatic grearbox is making terrible grinding noises until it changes gear and speed reaches just over 40km p/h. I am being gentle with it but have resorted to turning the music up so I can't hear it.
Seemed to be no problem before mechanic replaced the centre bearing - then the noise started after I picked it up. Returned to mechanic and he said it was already making that noise - it wasn't. But he can fix the problem for $2,200. I wouldn't even be able to sell a kidney on the black market for that amount of money

Is there a very very cheap way to fix the problem.

Well thank you Mad2 that was not really much help. Problem being with some mechanics is they targetfemales who know nothing about cars.
I was serious about my gearbox problem. Could the mechanic have done something to cause the problem in the first place? He also put the dust cover on the wrong way so that it scraped and sheared of some of the metal near the brake pad. Said he didn't do that either. After reading a post on this site I found I didn't need the dust cover to I took it off. Solved at least 1 noise problem.

my mother was treated the same way many years ago with her boat so yes i realise your serious. are you sure the noise is from the box?

only help i can suggest is let a trusted male friend take it to another mechanic for advice
