Hi, just wondering what would be the cauase of a 1995 EF falcon auto with the dip stick in the engine bay to have a hard upshift? anything I can check? I cant really afford to go to a mechanic to have it looked at so I'd like to have a go at fixing it myself before I do that...
I have just replaced the oil and filter, and was hopeing that would solve the problem but it hasnt fixed anything. The problem started the other day, I was driving it for a day... shifting fine, dad drives it the next day and it shifts really hard... the shift is soo hard it can make the wheels chirp shifting into second. Thanks for any help... |

Has it shifted hard since you got it, or just recently?
If recently, its more than likely low fluid. If allways, probally: crap (wrong type or old) fluid, low fluid, dodgey solenoids or shift kited. (The above is for future referance) Since you have said "The problem started the other day, I was driving it for a day... shifting fine, dad drives it the next day and it shifts really hard... the shift is soo hard it can make the wheels chirp shifting into second." AND "I have just replaced the oil and filter, and was hopeing that would solve the problem but it hasnt fixed anything. " Its probally low or incorrect fluid that you put in when you serviced it. BUT, the second quote makes it seem like its been a long time problem, so...refer my 1st paragraph Hope that helps

more than likely the solenoid needs to be replaced.

Thanks for the help/sugestions
I have used valvoline 85/95le (I think that was the number, I'll double check tomorrow!) We have had the car for about 2 years now. The problem started last weekend. Saturday I was driving it and it was fine. Sunday, dad started the car up... first shift it just slamms into 2nd, shifting into 3rd wasnt as noticeable then 4th was a bit harder than shifting into 3rd and it was shifting hard all day. Which is why I think it couldnt be anything like bands, because this problem didnt slowly develop or anything... it was just there one day when we started it. Yesterday the shifts got a bit softer, but then went hard again... today I did the oil change and it got 1 normal shift... So going by what you's have said, probably a solenoid OR low quality fluid. Which solenoid would be most likely to cause the problem? and is there any way I can test them before I go and pay for a new one? The fluid change was way over due IMO, which is why I think it might be low quality oil... I dont know how to get all the oil out though? like the oil in the lines and the rest of the gear box. Also, there was only 1 magnet in the oil pan... is that normal or have i got 2 missing??? Thanks |

it will be a solenoid (or 2)...probably the S5 is my guess, but as they are all expensive to replace I would take it to an auto joint and get their opinion before u start handing over money

Take it to a trusted mechanic to have a once over.
In regards to the oil. BTRs (4 speed autos in EA-EL) must have TQ95 oil from Castrol put back in, the BTRs are very fussy when it comes to fulid type. The autos take about 10Ltrs of oil, however a home mechanic can only get out about 4Ltrs at a time, unless you have a pump that you can hook up to the auto to properly flush the system out. To keep the amount of 'old' and 'new' fluid 'even', change the fulid every 50,000kms or every 12 months. But like diffs, autos only ever get the fuild changed when there is a problem, this is because (in ELs) at least, the manual says never to change the fulid unless it is used for towing, police or taxi uses, which means that most autos don't get changed till probally something like 150-200,000kms, plus Ford "sealed" the autos (removed the dipstick) Autos can get very expensive to repair, if the solenoids are on their way out, maybe other parts are as well. Might be time to change the whole gearbox...either rebuild (about $1600) or get a 2nd hand one from a wrecker (about $300), but a 2nd hand could have the same problem. Just some food for thought.

Doesnt sound like it'll be easily fixed
I'll try getting a full flush and replace it with TQ95 and see how that goes. If that doesnt work, I'll probably convert it to manual using the gearbox out of my EA... maybe. Thanks for the help |

Sorry if I made it sound like it wasn't an easy fix, just giving all the relevant info.
The flush might sovle all your problems, the solenoid might be a cheap fix.

When I 'serviced' the transmission, I didn't adjust the bands... It feels like only 1st to 2nd gear is hard shifting, 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th seem OK.
So... would it be the bands? even though the car was fine one day, then the next day it was shifting really hard? |

i dont think you can adjust the bands on your car. If its the same type of box my eb has the auto place i go to says you dont adjust any bands on them. Im sure they are the same box. Its probably your s5 solenoid. That causes the hard shift problems.

So... would it be the bands? even though the car was fine one day, then the next day it was shifting really hard? dont u listen? 10 lts of tq95 is going to cost about $100....so not a cheap way to go unless u are happy to trial and error things take it to an auto specialist ( a good one )

take it to a transmission place, go to a few, if a few of them say "yeah no prob book him in" as soon as you finish talking stay away as he prolly has no idea and needs to have a look to see, or they have just a vag idea. (assuming you never f**k up explaining the drama)
if you come across a place that once you have explained everything truthfully and making sense the auto person will go yep sounds like this is stuffed or, this, that the other is causing it etc then ask to book it in, you have found a decent place. ya got to remeber that the gearbox the BTR is like 20 years old i am sure this is nothing new and has happen to various other customers.

Thanks for your help |
