Ask him for the details as he knows exactly what is required

Hey mate, I converted my Futura to a T5 a while back. it's a very similar process, though with the T56 you need to wire in a reverse lockout also.
It's not a difficult process if you get all of the parts in a kit, so you know you can go from auto to manual withoiut chasing up other parts along the way. When i converted mine, ford initially said i'd have to use the auto ECU, but 24 hours later they told me they would need to use the manual ECU.. 24 hours after that they called and told me they had finally found an ECU map to suit my 2 letter car that they could put on the 3 letter ECU. Fortunately for the next buyer, this ECU has the 3 letter map printed on the ECU, but has the 2 letter map encoded. When I converted my car i considered the T56, but for a non turbo the need isn't as high. If you are serious about buying a conversion, I have mine sitting in the shed. If you need to know anything else about the conversion don't hesitate to ask. Cheers, MaTTe

cheers for the info matt its really helpful. im serious about converting my car in the near future (when i have the funds), but i would probably want a t56. i know its not really needed but my dad has a t5 in 3V V8, and its just not as smooth as a 6 speed. cheers for the offer anyway. when you were talking about a '2 letter ECU and a 3 letter ECU' what exactly did you mean by that? also did you need to cut your tailshaft or replace it? what did you pay for the manual ECU?
thanks kevin |

The 5.4s 5 speed isnt a T5, its a TR3650. T5 is a bit nicer

IMO, it's probably a good idea to get a custom 2 piece shaft made up as the BA Shaft is pretty bad. To get in contact with Ausman just send him a PM, he actually works at Ford so he knows the workings of the conversion, having done one first hand.

hey mate, on the side of your ECU is a sticker, it;ll have a number followed by either 2 letters, or 3 letters.
Generally the early b series were all 2 letters, and later models 3 letters. There are literally thousands of different ECU maps for all the different models from BA-BFII. If you really want a T56 then get one, but you'd be best off trying to source one from a NA6 rather than a turbo as the ratios wil suit you better. You also want to get everything in a kit as it will work out cheaper in most cases. That being said, my T5 was always smooth and precise, and since i've had it has always had redline and microglide in it. I bought my conversion from FTG. i got it almost complete from a low K's car. the only things i didn't get with the conversion were the tailshaft and spigot bearing. I had to get a tailshaft cut and balanced but that wasn't hard. I did the conversion mainly myself, but got my grandad to help me with a couple of things like lining up the clutch, but it was mainly all easy enough to do myself. Being the slack cun t i am, waking up at 12 and working til 4 it took me about 3 or 4 days to finish it(with a couple of v8supercar races in there), but if i'd got stuck in it'd have been much quicker. Ford had it for quite a long time trying to figure out the ecu (and killed my alternator in the process), but 3days and a bit of my assistance and they had the car running. I'll never forget the Service Managers face when i finally picked it up off him and he said 'Shes a Rocket!' Considering some of the cars he drives day to day i took it as a compliment, i jumped in the car and pretty much idled out to the street, i gave it a 1/3-1/2 throttle launch and it smoked half way up the street. After that, driving an auto has never cut it for me.. My car wasn't stock, but i had alot more planned for it.. I just have to be smart and focus my attention on the Bedford.. once that's done, i can get to the Firebird.. But the Race car always ends up gaining preference. When i have all these projects complete, if this manual conversion is still sitting in the shed, i'd love to shoehorn the engine and gearbox into a capri, or escort, or even better and anglia.. anyway, i hope this helps

thanks. yeah i think i will always go for manual from this day on. autos are boring and cost alot to repair(just spent 1000 getting my peice of s**t repaired) i should have just put that towards a conversion and kept the car of the road for a couple of months. anyway s**t happens

http://www.fordmods.com/member18607.html - Ausman's profile, send him a PM, he knows without a doubt what can and can't be done for the conversion, not guessing. He converted ken_t's BA XT
