howdy.
i need to do my radius rod bushes over the weekend, just a couple quick questions. i'm doing radius to k frame bushes and radius to lower control arm bushes. do i need to pull anything apart to get radius rods out? or just undo the nut at both ends? do i need to press the old bushes out of k frame and control arm? does anyone have tips to getting them out? hard to do them on jack stands? or should i do them at work on hoist? any help is much appreciated. |

You need to take the lower control arm off to remove the radius rod. I just used a grinder with a cutting wheel on it to take the edge off the front of the bush and then pried them out with a crow bar, piece of piss. Just dont cut the sub frame. And don't worry about the steel bush inside the new bushes come with a new one.

you'll need a good press for the lower control arm.
radius rod is easy, mine came apart without any need for force. only thing is undo the k frame side first with a extended spanner (be creative, i used a spanner with an adjuster sort of attached to the other end to give it the length)

If it's an old car and you intend to keep it for a while, consider doing all the front bushs, . . . and maybe all the ball joints too, even consider the tie rods, get a w/a and you won't have to think about the front anymore, . . . unless your shocks and coils need work too.

thanks heaps.
i forgot to mention, its an EF. ive already done all other bushes apart from the ones mentioned here. and ive already done shocks and springs. i decided im gonna do it at work with hoist and press etc. one more question, do i need to remove rotor and caliper to disassemble lower control arm?? |

It will make things allot easier. just un-bolt the caliper and tie it up, Don't unhook the brake line. Pop the cap off the disc, remove the split pin, the lock plate the unscrew the nut and slide the disc off. When you are tightening the nut back up on the stub axle don't do it up tight! just barely firm.

It makes it allot easier to separate the lower stub axle ball joint from the control arm. And it makes it easier to get to things with out that big round hunk of steel in the way. It takes all of 5 mins tops.
If your not doing all the bushes you could get away with dropping the bolt out of where the lower control arm contacts the sub frame drop it down and then swing the whole lot back. I don't know, from my experience i just do things to make life easier even though it looks like more work.

Do you want some lower control arms to press bushes into before putting a spanner to the car?
I can also help you with fitting them if you like.

thanks for everyones help. havent been on for couple days, went in to work friday night and got most of it done. i didnt need to pull rotor off to get arms out. but while i had it up on the hoist i ended up doing new rotors, pads wheel bearings and all the bushes. easy as using a press.
however theres STILL a couple squeeks which i was hoping to eliminate by doing all this. one is like a slow creaking noise when going over speed bumps. two is kinda like a high pitch rattle noise, does it over harsh bumps in road. and three is - when driving done a kerb slowly with wheels turned, high pitch sqeel - like a brake squeel but i just fixed the brakes. |

Good to hear mate. I need to do mine very soon as I'm destroying the inside edge of my tyres, even with a camber kit installed.
Do you think that the bushed could be pressed in using a vice? The high pitched rattling noise could be the brake caliper bolts not tight enough. My rears are doing the same thing. Creaking noise: maybe the rack bolts a little loose? My front end creaks a bit, but I'm pretty sure it's the front radius rod bushes. Anyway... Mike
