i have been noticing of late when putting my el ghia into Gear that it jumps forward quiet dramaticly, and also the gear changes arent as smooth either. What have i stuffed the tranny or the diff? or is this normal.

Thanks

The 4 speed auto on all models has a nasty habit of screwing the S5 soleniod (inside trans) when this is playing up you will experiance a sharp change between 1st and 2nd. Take it to a auto trans specialist should cost no more than $300 to fix

Funny thread. Here theres people fixing the S5 solenoid to smooth the 1-2 gear change and the rest of the site its people doing S5 mods to sharp up those changes :P

One kinda obvious thing to check is if your idle is high, that will sure make the car kick when you put it in D from N

Sounds like your bands need adjusting! I suggest a auto trans service.

went to the mechanic he told me the jerk forward and back is nothing to really worry bout. Said the uni joint still feels fine and said an transmission service and just cleaning the filters in the box would help heaps
thanks everyone for your replies

Hey all,

This is great, sounds just like the problem I'm having with my EL too... It really rams itself hard into gear (1->2) and then everything else is harsh too... I've had a full service on the tranny, and it went better for a while, then back to the way it was... It really only happens (whiplash changes 1->2) when it's at normal temp? :?

Might get the S5 looked at I think, sounds like the last thing left to do.

Thanks! :D
