every now and then especially on big down hills not often though my brake pedal goes hard and i need to use the handbrake to stop my car.
ive seen a few mechanics but as always after i leave them the pedal decides to go hard not while they are driving it. Checked all vacum leaks and its all good. Was gonna change the brake booster but not sure if the master cylinder is gone inside. Every one is saying to change this and to change that but they are expensive parts and dont want to change things that dont need changing. Any one got a clue? car is last of ED 5.0.

man sounds like a case of brake fade to me as u mention down hills
there are 2 types of fade 1, the most common is where the brake fluid boils and the pedal goes to the floor, after lots of hard braking 2, pad brake fade, not so common and ppl dont know about it this is where the pads themselves "fade" and there is a build up of gasses and dust between the pad surface and disc not allowing full contact and friction hence braking i would be looking at changine the pads and discs ( to a slotted style as the slots remove the gasses and dust ) also a brake fluid change will not hurt either

Personally, I would just do a complete brake change and bleed. It may take time, but imo, it is well worthwhile.

the peddal doesnt go to the floor, it stops half way and goes hard, Ill change the brake fluid anyway and take it from there, hopefully might work.

You're booster is shot. Get it rebuilt or replace it.

While we're on the topic of brake problems (rather than start a new thread), can anyone help me stop my freakin' brakes from squealing!!?? It's starting to drive me insane. I've taken off all the tyres at least twice now and cleaned the discs with brake cleaner and a cloth (lot of good it did) and it didn't help a thing. I'm thinking that the pad has just glazed over with crap and sanding it may help as it's got many more thousands of km's left on each pad. A friend told me i might have to get the discs machined - - costly!
Anyone got any ideas on a quick fix?

Machining the rotors isn't expensive. As long as the rotors are legally able to be machined. As for sanding the face off the pad, I wouldn't recommend it. Just buy a new set of pads. They aren't expensive, and make sure you bed them in properly so that the face of the pad doesn't become glazed up like the current set.

How much do you think that'd all cost?

Well, here at my workshop...
Costs $22 per rotor to be machined, and a set of front pads are about $45. Rear pads are about the same. That is before forum discounts apply. Not sure what the pricing scheme is like at other workshops though.

$45 for an axle set (so both sides).

Regarding the Brake squeal above. you can shampher the pads or place a noise reduction pad on the backing plate this might minimise the noise but if you are using performance pads you will more than likely get noise.
