Hey guys, yesterday unfortunately i hit the gutter at about 20k's
My front right wheel is badly damaged (it was a stockie anyway) and just hit rubbed the rear right, no damage done. I will be putting on alloys tonight, but i was just wondering what might have happened when i hit? (what do i check for in terms of the steering components) I didn't go up it, and nothing looks bent or cracked.. I will book it in with pedders for a 14 point check on tuesday arvo. thanks |

Nothing will damaged but your alignment would be out.

yeh, i just changed the two front tired and the bottom of the tyres seem to be facing inwards. When jacking up and when it was lifting up slowing, the tyres would rub outwards..
And when driving, i can feel every little pothole, not very comfortable to drive at all.. theres no vibrations at higher speeds (went max 80) so i hope it just needs an alignment |

That's sounds like normal camber and track change as the suspension droops. I'm not saying there isn't anything wrong though. I've done a number of things but i've never bent a rim noticeably, i would be pretty suspect myself about what else could be damaged. Quote: And when driving, i can feel every little pothole, not very comfortable to drive at all.. That could just be due to the different wheels and/or different tyre pressures, or it could be a bad wheel alignment, or worse. Or not even that, ideally.

well ive been to pedders and they have quoted me 1600 to fix up everything.
This includes stuff that wasn't caused by the accident ($900 just to fix gutter damage) apparently ive bent the stabiliser bar and control arms i will go and get a second opinion before i go any further, just p****d as the car is almost impossible to drive at the moment any opinions/comments? anyone got somewhere they could recommend me seeing? |

Mate maybe if you source the parts from wrecker & get new bushes it would be cheaper!
Would imagine Pedders will use new stuff possibly from Ford $$$$$$$ Still sounds a bit over the top for your quote though. Probably a fair bit of labour but you have unlimited sources seeing your in Sydney. Some Sydney members will give you places to try I'm sure!

Try any Fulcrum Distributor - I dont like pedders. A lot of what they do isnt right.

A standard stabiliser bar from Pick N Payless is $20, and a lower control arm woudln't be more than $50.
Just try and get some with good rubbers. Change them yourself or PM me to discuss other options. Also, did they mention if the ball joints are ok? Then get a wheel alignment $45. So if you do it yourself, it could only cost you $115 to repair. BenJ

are you sure you only hit the gutter at 20km/h?
as others have said, find straight bits from a wreckers and put it in yourself |

Get a second opinion. times are tough and it would make sense they are grabbing every dollar they can.
Why dont you just go to a mechanic and get a quote on performing the work. The other guys you mention are just a franchise. " they have to make X amount per month to meet their quota" keep this in mind.

thanks for the reply's guys. Yeh i will try and get a second opinion asap, as i also think pedders is dodgy.
I mean, last time i went in there with my old monty and got charged $6 just to tighten a bolt? And yeah i will possibly go to pick and payless but will most likely try other wreckers as not much is left in that place And yes it was definitely 20k's give or take 10km/h |

There are heaps of parts at Pick N Payless Blacktown.
You can take your pick of swaybars and lower control arms. BenJ

You say arm's', plural, so you need upper and lower control arms(?). To bend the upper arm sounds pretty serious, if that is really bent i would also check where the upper arm bolts to the car and the spindle. I would do as suggested, get secondhand parts and look for the best bushs. It would be an opportune time to do new ball joints, but the secondhand ones may still be usable if you're on a very tight budget. Small cracks and faded appearance are easily visible signs of bushs that have had a harder life. Getting a wrecker bar in there can also check for bush and ball joint wear. Another way to do it would be to remove the upper and lower control arms and spindle from a vehicle as a unit and fit to your car, removing the need to undo the ball joints etc. But only do this if the ball joints check out good.

I swapped the whole front end including K frame out in just a few hours. It is easy to do and you will be all sorted. My damage wagon from a a big suspension hit at high speed meant the car was a write off. The ball joint popped and the wheel smashed into the firewall. I got the car as a project and fixing the suspension was the easy bit. I ended up buying another body with almost no damage to do a body swap of all the fairmont goodies and powertrain.
If you have hit hard enough you may find the k-frame is bent where the control arm goes through the big rubbers. Mine was ! I also had a bent lower arm and ultimately it seems the strut tower is bent?
