My mate has a 3 speed auto with a ratchet shifter and 2800 stall convertor behind his V8. The tranny has been getting very hot and we cant work out why? The cooler lines dont seem to be blocked but were not too sure. How should they be tested? Also, do high (well, 2800 rpm) stall convertors tend to make the gearbox heat up or is there most likely a problem?

Yep Hi stalls will heat up the gearbox alot. I'd put a BIG transmission cooler on there, and change the fluid straight away before you screw it.

bands could be slipping in the trans....add a big mumma cooler and have box serviced...

Hmm, I'd want a trans cooler if I had a 2800 stall - it would be normal for it to get hot without one.

There is a trans cooler on there already. Does anyone know what the best way to test whether there is a blockage in the lines or in the cooler itself?? I assume compressed air would do the lines but what about the cooler?
Could we disconnect the return line to the tranny, start the car and see if fluid is being returned to the gearbox??

Just dont keep the engine running longer than it has to and dont get covered in the s**t. Fluid should start pissing out within a few seconds of the engine cranking over. And make sure you top up the box.
