Hio all,
I'm going to be replacing my clutch soon and intend to do it myself lying on my back under my car....my qu is - how heavy is a single rail 4 speed ? is it something you can manhandle without killing yerself or do I need to support it on a jack?? If a jack is needed should I cobble up some kind of support to fit the g box which attaches to the jack?

I'm sorta wondering if in fact its going to be easier at the end of the day to just pull the engine out and go that way.....any thoughts will be much appreciated!!!!

PS I'll be doing the job on my own so whatever method I'd have to support the g box myself, hence the question as to how heavy it is.....

Not that heavy if you can get under it. It may help to have 2 extra long bellhousing bolts to "get it up there". Then install the normal ones.

Cheers mate - that gives me added hope - I especially like your tip about the extended bolts - that was probably my major concern, like both lifting it, and getting bolts started, AND lining it up too...

Good tip. Gotta love these forums - where else would you get this kind of info?

Thanks again!

Heh, i still wouldnt exactly be sitting under there trying to do it alone. Just make sure the car is up nice and high. Just bolted the transmission back into my falcon, and am glad it was up as high as it was! Definately get a mate to throw in some bolts with you but.

easier to split box from bellhousing, bolt bellhousing up the do box. Additionally advantage is easier to line clutch up. If you can get any helper while sliding the box in have them put foot on clutch and the box will go in much easier.

Well thats a new idea and makes sense - I had the thought of making up a cradle to bolt to the top of my floor jack (you know, the kind on wheels) which would be a nice fit around the gearbox, so I could let that take the weight and be able to manoevre the whole thing on the jack's wheels...

Only drama I can see with this is that the car would need to be level to be able to just slide it back and forth - I was planning to have the front wheels up on ramps though so there will be an angle involved if you follow me, i.e. as the jack is pulled backwards I'd have to also slowly be letting the jack down.... bit fiddly but I reckon it would work.... any thoughts pro or con about this? I'm not doing it until weekend after next so I've got a bit of time to figure out the details.....

You're better off also using some axle stands at the back of the car so that the car is completely in the air and level so that you can slide the gearbox out. When re-fitting the 'box, try not to let it hang on the input shaft. This will load up the clutch disk and stress the sping plates. It can also bend the clutch plate fingers slightly and cause premature clutch shudder and a shorter life from the assembly.
