How much wobble should the drive shaft that comes through the extension (that turns the tailshaft) housing of the BTR 4 speed have? Mines fairly wobbly, wondering if that's the reason why the seal was leaking?

it shouldn't wobble, just a bit of end play.

the shaft is wobbly because of the bush in the back of the trans is worn out thats why ur seal leaked u can get the bush replace at a trans shop or get a bush and do it urself not that difficult

Well done just said! as stated the extension housing bush has worn thus causing the seal to go, this could also cause imbalance of the driveshaft.

It wont as the bush is behind the extension housing seal, the rear of the trans has to be removed to change this bush.

Talk to a transmission specialist, there is two types of bushes, one will not wear as quick, mine cost about $70 inc new seal to get it replaced, I was told it requires a special tool to remove in the car.

Not exactly, it is a special puller to do it while on the car rather than removing the extension housing.
