G'day, I might need to tow a trailer with a car on in soon, if I do I'll be putting the standard height springs back in the rear, and leave the ultra lows in the front.

I need to make two trips to take two cars a total distance of about 120KM, half of which a car will actually be loaded on the trailer.

Will my car handle this OK without pushing any limits? 'Cos a bloke I know has offered to use his jeep.

Also my car has a standard 3sp gbox without an oil cooler, and the tow bar is the standard one. I'll be needing to transport my XC and my other LTD, they weight between 1.4 and 1.6 ton plus the weight of the trailer. The trailer should have dual axles so I assume the tow bar will be able to handle the load OK?

Cheers

seriously...... use the jeep
you will be pulling close to 2 tonne, probably exceeds max capacity of the tow bar/vehicle towing capabilities, plus the old Borg warner will prob s**t itself...

That and the hassle of changing springs - take the jeep :)

On a stock trailer mate?

I had my XC and other LTD moved on a tow truck.. the XC was at my house and the other LTD was at my mums house, it had to be gone by 12 noon and couldn't arrive at the other house before 12 noon either, she was moving house lol.

Turned out to be a lot easier than organising a trailer and trying to move two cars, one at the precise times and try and help my mum move house, haha.

its not even worth hiring a trailer i dont reckon....its about $100 a day now...

i got a car towed from stalabns to geelong (60km) and it cost $125 by tow truck....buit then i also got a quote of $350 from nationwide towing...it pays to know someone cheap

It cost me $180 total to have two cars moved, one was about 70Ks and the other was about 40Ks, pretty good IMO.

It's $50 for a stock trailer for 24hrs from a place called Blugum in Hobart.. and they don't require a deposit either, $100 is a rip.

yer but thats only 60km, i picked up the trailer, and drove to wagga which is 400 km so its a 800km round trip,

i thought that 110 plus a 110 deposit is a bit much but a heck of alot cheaper than getting it towed,

Yeah I would have preferred to do it myself, I knew a bloke who had a jeep too so I wouldn't have to worry about swapping springs over, but didn't turn out like that..

Good option.

Ever tried towing an amount around your cars weight without brakes on a trailer? I towed around 1700kg in a falcon with a heavy duty tow pack for 12km when picking up a car for a mate, all I can say is I'll be getting an electronic brake controller and a better trailer before towing a car again. Thankfully my new car already has stiffer towing springs and the heavy duty towpack already :D

1700 gross is easy i do it all the time ,yes i know factory tow bars are only 1600kg dont care..
i towed a box trailer CHOC full of pavers about 2km was pushing my car and brakes what brakes about 2.5 tonne load.
your ultra low suspension wont worry ya just take it real easy .
just be gratfull you dont have to tow a cherry picker,
factory el falcons can tow 2300kg with hitch 1600 without

You exceeded the towing capacity, what is the point? Yes, the car will pull it fine and brake okay under ordinary circumstances.

No, it is not safe. No matter how carefully you drive if you ever need to brake suddenly goodluck. I assume you understand if you are ever in an accident your insurance won't cover it? Maybe it would be different if you were towing a car you had poured money into? But then again you are risking the car you are using to tow anyway so I guess not.

And you are wrong, a falcon can only tow its own weight without trailer brakes or 2300kg with brakes (the lesser of 1.5 x vehicle mass or rated towing capacity). Fairly sure the legislation regarding this is the same across the states? (This is a rhetorical question; it is).
