Need to completely flush my power steering. The fluid looks like melted chocolate instead of a nice red.
Can you just take off the return line start the car and keep turning the steering wheel while adding new fresh fluid to the pump until the return line spits out clean fluid? Is there another simpler way? |

yeah you can (and probably the most thorough), but can be a bit messy. You will have to have two people as the fluid moves through the system pretty fast.

Use the Ford part number R1-424 power steer fluid, its way better than using ATF. You can flush it, but it takes a bit of fluid to do it.

fast it not the word even at idle it pumps it faster than i could pour it in on the low pressure side ( the return to the pump ) just put the hose into a bucket

I just drained the fluid from the reservior, filled it up went for a drive, drained it again, went for another drive, and kept doing this till it looked clean.
Only took three drainings.

You don't have to drive it, just jack up the front so that the wheels are of the ground, then when you've drained the oil into a bottle, a 1.25lt works OK, then reconnect, fill it up, then start, and turn it from lock to lock a couple of times, then do it all again. You could use about 3lts. I suggest using R1-424 fliud. It lasts longer and doesn't go black.

I drained mine when I swapped racks by removing the connection on the rack nearest the passenger wheel. I guess if you wanted to flush it you could pour in ATF for a while then let that drain and replace with the specified fluid.

Is it a Ford part or can I get R1-424 from any auto shop?
Is there another name for R1-424? I was going to use TQ Dexron III. |

I used Valvoline Formula F power steering fluid from supercheap. I have been told it is a Valvoilne equivalent of the ford recomended fluid for EL on. If it is for an EF then ATF (not the TQ-95) would be fine.

i topped my EF2 up with castol power steering fluid several months back (maybe 200ml) and had no issues.

Just did the power steering flush.
Damn the pump spits it out fast. Turned the engine on and filled a 2 litre bottle in about 3 seconds. I couldn't pour quick enough into the pump to supply it. Got the whole system nice and clean and red though. Better than the melted chocolate looking fluid it had before. |

you dis commect the outfeed from the stering rack, use a oil container beneath the car so no mess, run car idle for a feww minutes, then wait till u hear a whirring sound from the engine bay then u know fluid is really low.....
re- connect the out feed line on the power seering assembly when car is off, fill power steering resoviour until at top. leave cap off the resoviour container run car on idle when u see fluid level drop add more fluid keep doing this until resoviour becomes to the full line and does not drop.... jack the front off the car both wheels and rotate the wheels from left to right get some one to tell u when thee bubbles have stopped in the resoviour then u know that the power steering system is fully bleed and operational..... this is the method a mechanic would use....and i also used this method... hopee fully this info is of some use thanx for taking the time to read this... i hate typeing for so long.. have a nice day

I did that exactly what you said except that the pump went empty in about 1 second not several minutes.
