Hi,
I need some help installing front lower ball joints inan EF. I wacked em out with a hammer, I wacked the new ones in with a pipe but I cant get them to go through the last 100mm. I used a pipe the diameter of the widest part of the ball joint and I'm thinking that's my problem. I am buying a tool made for EA-EL front ball joints tommorrow and was wandering if anyone on here has mastered this problem or used this tool before. I attatched a picture of the tool. Any help would be gladly appreciated.

Most of us don't consider installing balljoints a DIY job.

It is recommended to take the upright/stub axle to a mechanic with a large press and get them to press them in.

Your meant to use a press to fit them with that tool. Sometimes you have to remove the b/j boot before pressing in place.

^^Yep. It's a tool for a press. The balljoints need to be aligned correctly or they will distort when they slide in. This will completely bugger them. I took my stub axles to a mechanic to get them put in once. They didnt have a press. THey spent all day doing it and thier tool of choice was an oxy and a 10 pound sledge to remove them. Then that tool and a 10 pound sledge to install them. Ended up having to replace 2 of them cos they were out of alignment going in and they were damaged.

Really? It took me five minutes to remove it with a shop hammer and a vice. As for installing them, I had no luck. You may be right about getting them pressed in though.

Good idea to use a press - you can also take a bit off the leading edge of the splines with a bench grinder to make them go in a bit better. Be careful when you do it as you don't need much.

I took them in to pedders, they pressed them in for me for $22 each. That tool costs $226 and then you need a press. At least you guys know your stuff. Thanks for your help. Hopefully anyone else can read this thread and know that its best to get them fit at a suspension shop saves you big headaches.
