BTR's can be built pretty strong to survive, but it involves taking a lot of the daily driveability out of them.
Given what has been said here, I would probably stick with your T5Z for now. They can handle a decent about of power, its high torque which kills them, as long as you are N/A you miiiiight be okay. If you are serious about dragging, a C4 sounds like a good option. Just keep it in mind for when the T5 breaks haha |

I thought i'd try the BTR as if there is any HWY cruises or C4C etc. I have to drive a few hours to get there first. So if I buy a decent lockable stall it'll drive like normal on the highway to Melbourne

Is this in the SVO? You can pretty decent Hi-Stalls for the BTR that still retain lockup, I was looking at it for a while for the wagon, so I could still tow. As long as you have a trans cooler it should be fine.
From what I have read on boosted the hi-stall is fine, if anything it makes them better for street driving if you don't go crazy. The thing that kills BTR's is slipping between the gears. Just before they change gears the ECU (or TCM in EA) lowers the line pressure to make the change smoother. Turbo cars have so much torque they make the trans slip at that point, and the heat eventually kills them. The way the guys on boosted get around that is to remove the ECU control of the gearbox. This means whatever gear you put it in, it goes in. The catch is there is no cushioning at all. The gearbox seems to be able to handle this, the rest of the driveline cops a lot more abuse, but still seems to cope okay with it. But for a street driven car it maaay be a little harsh. I was looking for a while into a way of changing between the two modes. So if you are just driving normally, let the ECU control it. Then if you want to give it heaps, switch to direct and hold on. There was a couple of people working on PCB's for that I think. I ended up going manual so lost interest in it. (If you EA was factory manual, you won't have much choice, you will have to go direct control as you won't have a TCM) Even if you did, it would prob be for a 3 speed auto? |

The difference between the E-series and AU T5 is the length of the extension housing. Which means the output shaft needs to be longer to accommodate, The astro kit comes with an input shaft and a stronger output shaft, that why the Astro set doesn't work for the AU T5.
You can fit an E-series T5 to an AU, but the shifter will be forward of where it normally would and you might need to modify the console and/or the trans tunnel a bit. |

T56 is a 6 speed. TKO is shorter than an E Series T5.

Worked it out 8gs is way over over prices for a t56 I've seen the gearboxes 1500 then bell housing to suit windsor 800 plus mod tail shaft 600 and heavy duty clutch and machine fly wheel 1000

It's getting the right box to suit, then making it fit. The Mal Wood kit is a bolt in job.

Mods to make speedo work? Does your $1500 box come with a shifter? Your view is a little simplistic. Yes it can be done cheaper than a Mal Wood kit, but to say it's over priced is not accurate. |
