I've got some Kings ultralows here, and my next purchase is a set of shortened shocks... On ebay, Monroe GTs can be had for $360 a set, but people don't seem to regard them too highly on here, I've also got a quote for Pedders sports ryders, for $656, and I'm waiting for a reply for a quote for some Boges. I know Koni's are highly regarded, but I have no idea what kinda price I'd expect to pay, assuming comparably high.

Just wondering what is the best value for money for a firm, but comfortable (as comfortable as ultras can be) ride? So what's good, what's crap?

By the way, the car is a 6cyl EF fairmont.

I have shocks that a guy on the forums rebuilt for me. They're firm and responsive, yet not overly uncomfortable. You do notice bumps in the road more than standard, but the car cornering ability is comparable with my mates WRX. It's like the car is on rails.

He'd do a price much better than $600

I don't mind the Pedders Sports Ryders in the back of mine. Nice and firm and weren't too damaging on the wallet at all.

Got a quote for Koni reds around $600, so I guess I'm tossing up between Koni reds, and the sports ryders... Unless anyone can suggest another?

i thought the sport version of the Monroes were fairly new, i havnt really seen any feedback on them yet.

However i can say that the standard Monroe GT's will die quickly with Superlow springs and lower, but are ok with 30mm drops in ride height

Hmmm, very interesting, well these are the ones here, and are the sport version...

I would also suggest you take a look at Ultima struts and shocks. They are a budget priced product, and so far I have been unable to fault them.

The Monroe GTs that I bought were supposedly for short springs etc, but were the same length as the STD ones.

The rear Ultima short heavy duty shocks I bought were large bore and much shorter. I run S/Low Kings in the back and the ride is much improved. The best part is you can get them for around $100 a pair on ebay. The front struts in two different lowered heights are approx $130 a pair on ebay.

You don't have to spend a fortune to achieve a great ride and excellent handling.

I agree with Benj's comment about price not always being the determinant of goodness or appropriateness. I don't know about the ultima's. Regarding your earlier comment, i would go for the koni's well before i would go for the sportsryders if they are a similar price, i really don't imagine a pedders product being comparable with a koni.

I'd recommend KYB's I had them in my EL (part of a Whiteline kit). Very happy with them.

bilsteins are fantastic for a little bit more than the koni's. A mate had them in his XH XR8 ute, the ride and cornering ability was outstanding

The Monroe GT sports are faily new so very few would have used them yet. You cant really compare the GT standards with superlows as they are not designed for that application. Ive had the Ultimas in my EL with lows and had issues with the rears "squeaking" over small bumps. I believe it was an issue with the seals, after 3 sets with the same problem i gave up and went for Boges. I still have the Ultimas in the front. The Ultimas i found rather harsh. Soon i will purchase a set of the new shortened GT gas sports and see how they go.
