The bloke at Bob Janes was showing me hub adapters for my car the other day, just outta interest, I don't need them as the wheels I'm buying are already the right offset.
He showed me them getting fitted to an EL and them on an EB with AU wheels on it. There really not bad, and according to him insurance companies are fine with them (but they don't like spaces). They actually bolt onto your hub in the same way that your wheels do, and then they have five new threads which your wheels bolt onto, so I don't see how anyone can call them unsafe, as the wheels bolt onto the adapters exactly how they would on an original hub, and the adapter bolts onto the original hub exactly like a wheel would, all they do is safely increase the offset. With the said, I'd prefer not to use them! 
O, and he said there around $50.00 each, seems a bit much to me... |

Yeah, Ive seen a few types... some don't even sit on the axel. and its 200 onto the price of the wheels too

I have told by an Tyre Joint wheel Spacer or wheel adapter make the car un road worthy thus making it illigal

As far as i know spacers are definately unroadworthy and not covered by insurance..
im keen to know if hub adaptors are legal or not?? theres far more wheel range for AU/BA than there is for E-series

Well another downside is they create a weak point, as instead of having your wheel straight onto you hub, you got wheel, adaptor then hub.

WTF, my Bob Jane said they won't touch adapters or fit any wheels that won't go directly onto my car?! They said something about being responsible for safely installing my wheels or some s**t. Argh!

yeah the wheel shop i got mine from said they cant fit them as there insurance wont cover it. but they were happy to sell them to me! hub adaptors are definately illegal (in vic anyways), unlike spacers though they are safe (if installed properly).

yeah a mate of mine said he was running them on his '72 fairlane but they put alot of stress on the wheel bearings and he eventually had one seize. that said i know of guys that have been running them for years on e series cars without any problems. so far ive had mine on about 3 weeks. so far so good, only problems so far is everywhere i have work done on the car i hear "i thought those hub adaptors were illegal?"

Can you get busted from the Fuzz for having em, like if u get pulled over is there anyway they can check 2 see if u have them??

yeah you could get busted for them. and they are in plain view through the wheels for everyone to see.
i put the brake dust protectors on, they're like black metal discs that sit between the wheel and the hub adaptors. they do a s**t job of stopping brake dust getting on your wheels, but for hiding hub adaptors they're perfect! but IMO i dont think that 99% of cops would know what they are, or to even look for them. my boss is an ex traffic cop and i asked him if he knew what they were and he just gave me a blank look.

when you put the hub adaptors on its probably a good idea to put a bit of loctite on the threads before you do them up. the guy at the wheel shop i bought mine told me to do this, bit of extra assurance.

That would be deependent on the state. So glad someone has brought this thread up from 2 yearrs ago... |
