my 98 Festiva has a buggered outer drivers side cv boot, I've caught it in time (bonus of preventative checks) and have got a replacement boot for it, just wondering if anyone has a something like a gregorys manual for festiva and if possible could scan the pages on how to change the boots for me.

its not too hard really... just jack it up and take the wheel off. Heres a very quick and general rundown
- undo caliper - undo lower balljoint - remove dustcap / centre cover on disc - Remove split pin / nut or circlip (which ever applies) - pull disc forward and off the cv shaft - pull shaft out - i now normally use side cutters and cut the metal ring off the boot - slide boot off / out of the way - now you need to dismantle the cv - should see a circlip holding the outer race on. Remove this and slide balls of shaft - pull the outer race off - should be another circlip holding the balls on the shaft. Remove this *** Now be careful the balls dont fall apart *** - slide boot of the shaft - use some sort of lube (make sure its good with rubber) - slide on new boot - may need a special tool to clamp tight the new rings that hold the boot in place - put cv back together as per dismantle just in reverse and now put back together! Very rough but once you start you'll see what i'm on about and should be pretty straight forward. I did just edit that - so reread it if you read it before i eddited it! Little more to it than i thought. Need a beer. Oh yeah - don't foget to have a beer when doing it! Cheers Matt |

tah, I reckon'd I'd be able to make it up as I went along, just wanted to be sure there where no nasties, all my mech experience and I've never pulled a CV joint apart except for a brief period during my deisely apprenticeship 15ish years ago

well, I'm down to pulling the joint apart, but there are no circlips to be seen, how do I get the joint apart so I can get to new boot on

i have never worked on one but i have done plenty of cv's some have the clip in side the bearing case located on a grove on the shaft and its like a round wire, looks like this C

i think fastleno is right... its a c clip and the shaft should just knock off from the joint with a bit of persuasion from a copper hammer.

exactly what it was, I was just being a sook and I couldn't get a clear swing at it, I ended up pulling the shaft out of the box by accident, oil everywhere, but once out 2 decent whacks if fell off. cheers
