Want to keep tinkering and buggering about with the car trying to get it to handle better? - get any other brand. Want to just enjoy the F---k out of driving your car and not worry about making it better because it already is as good as it gets? - get Bilsteins - simple.

Koni adjustables......or Belstein Shocks...get the correct length to match the springs you have.....
Make sure you have a fat wallet if you go looking for the above shocks |

I've had the following shocks in my car - here are my observations from that EXPERIENCE:
Koni Red .......................... Yuck. Koni Yellow ....................... Yuck. Monroe GT Premium .......... #$@%&* CRAP! KYB .................................. Very decent and competent OEM replacement but not really what I'd classify as performance. Gabriel VST ...................... Excellent ride/handling but lasted only 5000km. Pedders Sports Ryder ........ Felt very similar to KYB's. Bilstein ............................. God uses these in his car. A note about the Konis - they had excellent ride and could make the car "feel" like it was performing but the actual cornering and handling performance was not there - brought home when a Corolla whips yer a*** on a twisty bit you thought you were going the ducks guts on (with Bilsteins you wave ta-ta to same said Corolla whilst sipping your Maccas milkshake and driving with one hand). And the worst thing about particularly the Koni Yellows was they had a nasty tendency to make the car's ballance "shift" partway thru a corner - also one front one s**t itself and the dealer didn't want to know: "You must have used them wrong" - yeah, I fitted the useless s**t things to my car!!! (they worked great for holding the shed door open after I took them out of the car).

"but your springs and swaybars have a lot to do with your handling aswell.."
- quite right - and nothing I did with the springs (tried 3 different types) or swaybars (adjustable Whitelines) made those Konis handle decently - they always FELT like they were handling but really they weren't - contrast with the Bilsteins once they went in was nothing short of shocking. "some people may agree some may disagree.." - again, quite right.

I've got the Koni Yellows and find them to be excellent - light years ahead of the Pedders Sportsryder system i had. You'll be more than pleased with both the Konis and Bilsteins. I originally planned to fit Bilsteins but went with the Koni's for a few reasons:
- Many people (including the experts i consulted) said they were too hard for everyday driving - They not adjustable like the Konis Both brands can be rebuilt and revalved if you want but i refused to rebuild brand new $1300 Bilsteins with softer valves..

I've had two cars lowered one on Bilsteins and the other Koni adjustables.
The Bilsteins were great gave a smooth ride and the car took bumps with one rebound. The Koni's were a little stiffer. You can feel the road more and generally gave a better handling. Bilsteins have worked on the valve technology for a whlie which is why you can have a nice smooth ride while increasing the handling characteristics of the car. My personal opinion is I prefer Konis. I like to feel the road more and enjoy a slightly harder ride. |
