Hey all
Is there way to determine exactly what model falcon a T5 box has come out of? I have an EF T5 box from the wreckers but one thing leads me to believe I might have been sold an older box. The shifter lever is of the older style <ED The shift lever was only loosely bolted on so they may have just chucked it on but im a bit sus on it. (the speedo sender gear was that for a 3.08 diff though so its likely either an ED or an EF box)

I was told to check for a roofing nail under the reverse sender or something. Or put the box into first gear, and mark the input and output shafts with a texta. when turning the input shaft one rotation the output shaft should turn 2 and 3/4...or was it the other way around?
something like that phong =P~ EDIT: here is the link for the external identification of T5 boxes... http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopi ... ght=manual

Thanks man,
on another note is the ED and older shift lever all that much diff from the later EF-EL ones in feel, I know they look certainly different My guess is the EF/EL lever is a little closer back overall for those without long arms.

Is there a part number on the box? It should be on a tag on the right hand top bolt of the main casing.

Have a look at the casting dates, they are a good indication, when the tag is missing.

code is 87DA-7003-AB
The unit was told to me as an EF transmission from the wreckers, it does not have the 'roof nail' mounting mentioned in the other thread.. Looks like instead of getting a 10 year old box theyve sold me a f**k 20 year old box. I'll drop it on their f**k heads.

Yep, it's an EA box.
Engage first gear, whiteout mark I/P and O/P shafts, rotate the output shaft once, you'll find the input shaft will have rotated 3.5 times (3.25 times for EBII onwards). At least now you know how to identify them externally . . . .

not sure that the part number is an indicator that the box is old....maybe that part number just refers to the housing, which may not have changed since EA...
btw where is the part number and casting number?

I did the rotation, its 3.5.. Im p****d.. not so much because of the gear ratio, but basically because ive been sold a gearbox about 9 years older than my already aged car...
I assume that first number is a year of manufacture or install?

700 with bellhousing, a new clutch.. no pedal box.
for an EF box I thaught I was getting a pretty good deal, but for a box that was first in service when I was first in kindergarten im not so sure now. -- the number I read off was on a metal tag bolted to the box. From reading the other post on this issue, the EF box which had a prefix of 94 and not 87, does seem to correspond to year somewhat. other numbers on the actual box were 0552-066900 AC on the extension housing, and 13-52-065-908 on the trans case. And just to add to the rest, it shifts pretty average.. when pushing the lever forward out of reverse the whole box moved accross the floor before it came out of gear on several occasions Other gears werent too bad but likewise 2nd back to first would often not happen without a few attempts.

Be nice to them... There are alot of converted cars out there, and wreckers aren't exactly known for their intelligence when it comes to checking things like compliance/build plates.
I had a massive argument with a wrecker about what kind of flywheel/clutch combos came in EB2 and ED's. They claimed 3 bolt, I told them they were wrong. The said there is a ED out the back being stripped with a 3 bolt as proof... I got them to drop the car, looked at the trans stamp and told them it was an auto. They still didnt believe me, so I told them to ring Ford. I got a very quick apology after that. Specially since I drive 40mins to specifically buy an ED flywheel that turned out to be an EA one. The tags do refer to the model in a way. 87DA is EA to EB1. 91DA/92DA is EB2 to ED. 94DA is EF. 96DA is EL. |

Thanks for that info arm79 its much appreciated. I have cooled off a little and im gonna give them the benifit of the doubt. As I orig said the speedo sender gear was that for a 3.08 diff so the box may very well have come out of an EF.
Ive also finally seen the ratio comparison EA 1 3.50, 2 2.14, 3 1.39, 4 1.00, 5 0.78 (5 speed manual) EB onwards 1 3.25, 2 1.99, 3 1.29, 4 1.00, 5 0.72 (5 speed manual) (as quoted by altedxr6 in another thread) So it looks as though it certainly wont be any slower at any rate especially with my 3.23 diff. I dunno what to do with it, EA gearbox with a 6 bolt clutch arrangement? Dont think I have much choice as EF boxes are so rare, and im not putting massive power into the thing. My only concern is if its been in more than one car who knows how many km's its done and crashes its been in.. Think I might open it up and look at the gears.

chuck it in and see how it goes. my t5 came out of an 88 model ea cfi wagon with 330,000km.
its in my ef and its now done another 20,000km on top of that in my car. But I knew the box was alright before fitting it. I would think that the ef gearboxes are smoother tho, but its a bit poxy not getting what you pay for thats for sure.
