I have heard differing opinions from a few friends on whether IRS or no IRS is better for a car aimed towards track/mc day work. Anyone with experience or maybe a bit more knowledge that can maybe tip the balance for me? I'm predominantly thinking of IRS (or no) in the back end, as some cars I'm looking at have full 4 wheel IRS or just the two (either axle).

Any edjumacated opinions or comments are appreciated. Thanks!

There was an article on Whitelines site about this very predicament. I'm looking for it now, but if I remember rightly, they basically said that for ease of setting up, a Non-IRS is the way to go. With IRS, especially a cheaper one, you end up having to deal with changing geometry in the rear as well as the front.
It basically said that a well set up Non-IRS can be just as quick as an IRS car, especially if bucketloads of cash aren't going to be invested in it.
I think that's what it said. It's really hard to find the article, there site is like a labryinth...

Ford US asked their customer base if they wanted IRS in the new Mustangs. They said NO.

(maybe not a good answer/reason, but yeah, no NEED for IRS)

IRS is, IMO, great if it's a GOOD setup. The Ford IRS in both the AU and BA is fantastic, good control over suspension geometry through the whole wheel motion.
Not so good is VT era Commodore IRS. Ridiculous amounts of negative camber as suspension compresses.
I assume you are talking about buying a track spec car with either IRS or non-IRS.
I would consider getting a little shortlist of cars that you are looking at, IRS and non-IRS, and giving the guys at whiteline a call, and talking to people who have alot of experience modifying and tuning different vehicle suspension setups.
(sounds like I work for whiteline I know, but I don't, alot of there ideas and there kits are just really good, and I'm sure others would have no qualms recommending them either)

I run a full whiteline suspension - great stuff.

I do the odd track day, and drive hard everyday. I have complete confidence in the car's handling, and when rgiht on the edge, it's a very smooth transition into oversteer and it's easily recoverable. Unlike the stock EL suspension, where you had little warning before oversteer, and it was a bastard to get back in line.

I reckon with plenty more power, it'd be a great 'dorifto' setup.

I have the AU IRS and its fantastic. When it comes to grip on these goat tracks called roads we have there is no comparison.

That said, if its for track work then go the live axle. The reason is that tracks are far better maintained and smoother than a normal road. Given that the IRS is only effective on bumps (mid corner bumps especially) and ripples, and that its weight penalty is pretty big, any decent track car should remain Live Axle for the weight savings and long term development already available.

I got IRS for the road, I'd take LA for the track.

Yeah, for a once in awhile track special, it probably is a bit easier to stick with a Live rear end. Mind you, some of the Jap stuff, Silvias and the like, have pretty nice IRS setups, and make for great club racers.
It really is a decision that cant be made based on Either IRS or not IRS, you need to look at what car, what the setup is etc. etc.
