Hi
I believe 4 speed EB and ED auto taxis used to convert back to older 3 speed autos to avoid the high costs of repairs-Can such a conversion be done to an AU or would the problems with the computer be insurmountable.Im not keen on spending $1600-2000 on my 4 speed.
Thanks
Greg

If if fit okay it wouldnt be much different to a manual conversion as far as electronics/ECU go.

youd have to mount the kickdown cable,

plus, all the 3spd autos out there would be getting long in the tooth now so a good one would be impossible to find (and a reco one wouldnt be cheap either)

why not just get a secondhand 4spd?

2nd hand 4spd with 3month warranty from a wrecker was $650.

I've run a 3 sped in my EF no worries, didn't touch the ECU. The box is sitting ehre, it's yours if you pick it up!

Thanks for the great offer but a bit far to travel from Brisbane-So just to clarify: Did you just change the bellhousing and/or converter and leave the normal EF electronic trannie connection unattached-Any other mods like driveshaft etc.Would it be similar on the AU?

With the 3 speed, it's the box, bellhousing and torque converter. Bracket for the kickdown cable on the rocker cover.
It actually came fitted in the car when I got it.
Car drove fine (cept reved high on highways due to lack of 4th gear and not the right diff ratio for the 3 speed box).
All I did after was remove the 3 speed, replace with 4 speed, replaced the box, bell housing, torque converter and removed the kickdown cable.
Drive shaftt was the same for both.
If I remember right the electronic connection to the tranny just wasn't connected with the 3 speed (or actually there's 2 of them - 1 was connected, other wasn't). Just reconnected it to the 4 speed.
Never touched the ECU which has the built in tranny control.

Why "not for long"-I thought the 3speeds were pretty good

i done this conversion for someone last week to a eb falcon, the box was 3sp BW51 out of a ea , the box and converter bolted straght up not a problem, but i had to use a ea gearbox crossmember and drill two new holes to suit the eb, tailshaft fitted and i used the 4sp linkage to the shifter and it still runs a 4sp shifter, and the wireing needed changing on the inhibiter switch the plug is the same but the 4 wires for inhibit/reverse are diffrent posistions and the 3sp needs to run a kickdown cable, works fine although the eb was series one and had a TCM, for a AU you will probly need to find the doco on converting auto to manual so as you can add resistors in you loom so as the ecu thinks the 4sp auto is there and stuff.

True, they are getting pretty old. Meanwhile, the fuel consumption will skyrocket, the car will move like a slug & resale value will drop even further. It really will be a false saving.

As above, get a wrecker 4spd with warranty, or for less money than a reco job just do the manual conversion (with the exact opposite effects to the 3 speed swap ie. less fuel, more performance, more desirable at resale)
