The Auto in my BA is occasionally grabbing 1st with a sudden jolt. It only does this when its cold.
Its like you put it into drive, but its not really in gear, then a slight bit of pedal and it jerks into to gear and moves off. A mate of mine told me the trans is likely to die soon.

It was serviced only a few months ago. Problem was, back then a cooler line failed and the tranny lost most of its oil. It had to be towed home. I refilled it then took it down to a mate of mine for a check and a service. He told me that the box looked ok and hadn't suffered any damage.
I'm going to have to take it back but being close to Christmas he's about to shut up shop for a few weeks.

I just spoke to my mate about it. His best guess over the phone is the rear bush is leaking and I'm running low on oil. Apparently its quite common.
Booked in for Wednesday.

This is not good. Took my car in today and although they got it to do it twice. they can't find anything wrong with it. Plenty of oil, no leaks and no codes!
They seem to think its a valve or oil pressure problem. We're going to try a rebuilt valve body next wednesday, if its not that then the pump is next

If you ran it out of oil - it might have burnt out the C2 forward drive clutch..

You can't really run them out of oil, they stop working well before they run dry. The thing is it drives fine, and this only happens occasionally, if a clutch was burnt out it I'm sure it would do it more frequently.

A lot of cars do this don't they?
When you go from park to drive first let it catch gear in reverse first. Then it should be good for drive. My grandads xt did what you describe, no apparent problems with it. Just happened when it was cold. Give it a try. |

The other day when it happened, I pulled out of our local shopping centre drove 80 metres to the lights, sat there until the green, then it happened when I moved off from the lights. So it had already been in gear.

Ok, it looks like it IS the sign of a dying transmission
Just got back from the workshop. They took the valve body off and found lots of debris, luckily not metallic. Looks like the clutches are worn enough to cause the piston inside the clutch pack to move too far and chew out the seal. Its going to cost $1000+ and is booked in for the 12th. I have to nurse it till then so it looks like I'll be on the bike a lot

Picked the BA up today. Total rebuild minus the converter which was still ok.
Just about all the clutch plates were worn out, one had actually broken. (car has 149,000 on it) parts list was something like this overhaul kit complete clutch friction set New brake band New filter New S5 & C4 steel. Now bear in mind this guy is a friend of mine and I get this done at a very good rate so I wont quote his fee. However this would have normally cost somewhere around $1600, it still cost me over $1000.

My mate said he does a lot of taxis at about 350,000. Mines a bit premature at 150,000!
we're guessing its because it ran out of oil 6-7months ago when the cooler line came off
