I just got myself a trolley jack and some stands which i have never used before (only the crappy little scissor jack ).
Anyway before i start mucking around i wanted to know wheres the best points/locations to 1. jack the car up with the trolley jack and 2. place the axle stands. Just wanted to clarify these before i started Its an EF if that makes any difference.

To lift the rear, under the diff head is perfect. Lower onto the stands set as close to the disc calipers as is practical. For the front, lift on the cross member, then place stands, once again as close as possible to the disc calipers,or alternatively, place the jack stands under the sills, where the jacking points are, just forward of the front door opening.

Cool thanks for the reply, so jacking it up at the front from the k-frame wont do any damage do it?

Unless you've got a long reach trolley jack you wont get to the diff or the cross member and still be able to pump the handle.
I find I have to jack one side up first from the normal jacking points then place axle stand under chassis rail. Then repeat on other side. To lower back down I use the diff & cross member.

phongus. i got a big muhfuggah jack (2600kg swl) for 99 bucks at supercheap when they were on special. end of financial year is coming up and youll be able to get some bargains if you look in the right places. got the stands for about 20 bucks a pair. the jack is good i can stick it under the diff and the handle is long enough to reach out the back of the car no sweat.

Becareful when lowering the car onto the stands, not to pinch any cables - eg. handbrake cable, brake lines ABS sensor cables etc. Otherwise it's easy.
I've just done a gearbox swap with two ramps, two axel stands, and a big trolley jack, with a longer handle and it doesn't need much pumping movement to get it going thankfully, my old cheapo one needed alot of movement to get going, thus was no good for the diff or k-frame.

I have seen people use the same brand stuff on several car forums on the net and they say they havn't had a problem with them at all. Only other thing i guess is the jacks pretty high (as most are) so if your cars lowered with a kit you might have troubles getting it under. I know at my mechanics he has to manually jack each corner to get the hoist bars to swing under the car as they just hit my sideskirts at normal height, so might have to drive it up on a block of wood for extra height

yeh, my cars to low to get under the kframe. gets under the diff fine, have to drive onto bricks first when doing oil, then jack it up. trolley jack is about 10 years old.. MARLOWS! haha. its pretty shagged, its hydrolic ability isnt what it used to be, have to put muscle into it to get it moving haha, smack the crap out of the front bar to get it moving to. o well thats already scratched enough

Its not the length of the handle thats the problem its the length of the trolley itself. The handle sticks out far enough to get hold of it, but because the other end of the handle is so far under the car I can't get enough swing to pump up the jack.

Then you pull the handle out and pump it by hand until you get enough room to swing the handle. Its not rocket science.
