Hey fellas,

I have a EF xr6. Found an issue since getting it about 10 months ago. Under braking or turning corners, intermittantly a knock comes from the front end. I have since replaced all springs and shocks to SSL kings and monroe GT sports, also replaced the D rubber sway bar bushes at the same time. Anyone heard of a common issue with knocking in the front end. Oh and also checked the ball joints and they appear to be nice and tight. Any help much appreciated.

Cheers Joel

Ball joints, tie rod ends, bearings, caster rod k-frame bushes, upper control arm nuts and rack bolts.

I'd be looking at all those to make sure they are tight and servicable.

i will be getting a camber kit for the front to accomodate for the lowered springs and get it aligned, will quiz them about it then, just seeing if there may be a common trend with this model and a knock in the front end.

Cheers guys.

Yeah, there is common trend. It could be any of those things I wrote.

I remember at a driver training thing ages ago, the intructor commented that E-Series made a loud knock/bag sound under very heavy braking and cornering from the factory. Only commented because the car on the track at that time was an ED that made that noise.

There obviously enough compliance in the front end somewhere that allows parts to touch under extreme circumstances when brand new. I would think 15 years down the track that potential would be much higher.

I remember doin pre-deliveries on the ED & EF/EL's, and having to attack the chassis rails with a die grinder near where the front sway-bar went past....as the sway bar would hit on cornering and going over gutters/driveways.

Wow, that's dodgy. Did every car receive this mod, as mine knocks occasionally?

Mike

Wasn't dodgy at all...just cleaned up what Ford didn't...we even painted them too, and where the mounting points were when they got painted at the factory too.
We did a lot of stuff on PD's that other dealers didn't do.

Sounds logical.

I suppose when stock front suspension can move between 5 and 10cm back and forth during braking and turning, when the bushes bounce back from extreme to extreme there is a chance the metal bits they are holding will hit something.
