Could be a number of things.... Ball joints, tie rod ends, rack ends, wheel bearings or even the steering column bearing on firewall. The knock i had in my steering was mainly from the steering column bearin on the fire wall.

I was just going to post a new topic with something similar to this...well I believe it is in the rack...or perhaps the column / shaft on the way to the rack.
Basically I have about an inch of steering wheel free play that does not steer one way or another. I am unsure as to where to check first - could it be intermediate shaft ? As far as I know, this is a notorious common issue with many falcons - I know of 2 other falcons that suffered this same symptom - one being pyroay. Any help apprciated. |

I had knocking noises in the front end and thought is was the rack & pinion. While putting in new shocks & springs, I found both the lower ball joints were loose. During some transmission servicing, a mechanic found that one of the tie rods also needed replacing.
The repair manuals will give you some tips on how to check the different parts.

I had a knock in my steering (only when parking) always knew what it was in my case.
Try tightening up the rack to cross member bolts (15mm) iirc. This movement may only be slight, but the sound travels quite well!
