I was wondering, whether to get Koni Adjustables in the Rear of my car.
I have got Super Super Low springs and had Pedders COmfort Shocks fitted in the rear already, but its a pretty bumpy ride with anyone in the back. The guys where i got it all done, said they will replace the Pedders with Koni's for $400 (Rear only), i've already bought the Pedders installed for $140.
So question 1: Are Koni's good and do they still have the reputation of being extremely good as they did years ago, or has their quality dropped off at all?
Question 2: After i have already paid $140 to get Pedders installed, would another $400 on top be about the right price for these Shocks.
THe Koni's are the externally adjustable's (if that helps)

Thanks Dave

Hey Mate,

Pricing on the Koni's sounds about right. I can get the koni sports for $460 Front, $380 rear.

I recently picked up a pair of Koni Rear adjustables from the wreckers for $25 - BARGAIN! :) They'll be going in to replace the very disappointing KYB's. They're soft and they rattle - only 6 months old!

I'm planning to put koni's in the front of that car also, and a full set in the wagon. The reputation is still strong, the quality is great and the ride is unbeleivable!

when you say adjustable, is this ride height or stiffness of the dampening?

Punnisher_42 - stiffness of dampening.

Koni are very good shocks, I got a set of red (special) ones for the rear and they handle like a dream.

I just got a set of the yellow Konis for the front of my ED. Still yet to put them in. Will my ride be smoother AND will the car handle better than my current stock shocks  that have had to cope with superlows?

Does anyone know the approximate price for rebuilding Konis?

Waggin, the Koni "Sports" - are you referring to the reds or yellows? Coz that's a bloody good price for the yellows!

your car will handle better for sure but if you have old tired stock shocks now its going to be alot firmer ride

Koni's have a lifetime (of the car) warranty.

I have 4 koni reds in my car. Just magic! Getting them set up properly is the key. I am running all mine at +25% with the whiteline springs. You will probabily need more damping with lower (and therfore stiffer) springs to control the stronger spring.

If you want softness dont go "Super super low"! :D

Cheers guys, I'm not expecting to have a smooth ride, just a fair bit better than i do at the moment, cause it's annoying if you're in the back of the car.

Thanks again.

Any adjustable shock, short of going a full blown racing shock @ up to $5000 per CORNER, only have adjustable rebound, not bump. Rebound is also sometimes called reset. A soft rebound will allow the suspension to 'wallow' or float on the road. Too hard a rebound will pull or keep tyres off the road, decrease handling and drastically increase braking distances

Also, someone mentioned here ride hight. Springs set the height. Shocks have nothing what-so-ever to do with ride height. If they did, people wouldn't put short springs in their cars to lower their ride, they'd put short shocks in their car.

That explains why when I adjust my rear's as hard as they go, its almost impossible to pull the piston back out :D

So what are the key points to consider when setting up an adjustable rebound shock?

Well, basically for a road car you can do a simple test.

You push down on the bonnet, or boot, a few times.... like a tramopoline(damn I watch too much simpsons). The suspension should go right back to ride height. If it extends further than ride height and then settles down, you need more rebound (stiffer shock)

I'm not sure how to test if it's too hard. It's easier just to adjust it too soft on purpose, then stiffen it up. If course, if it's a red koni, it means pulling it off for every adjustment. VERY annoying, although no as annoying on the back as the front.

Also, when I saw Top Perofrmance with my koni reds, they told me that something like 50% of the adjustment is in the last 1/2 turn. So if you've got it on full soft and give it 1/2 a turn, it only stiffens by a fraction of the amount of if you've got in 3/4" turn from the bottom and give it 1/2 a turn. Fine tuning of Konis can often be as little as 1/8" of a turn if their right near the hardest adjustment.

Don't fit the Konis yourself - because when they f**k out the dealers won't want to know you:

"You must have used them incorrectly" - yeah, like I fitted them to a car (they DO work quite well as door stops I have to admit...)

Just my experience.

I dont care much for warranty. I purchased them for $25/pair. If they die, i'll just get them rebuilt.
