First of all, this picture here, can it be confirmed that this is my diff seal plug that is leaking, and can i just buy a new bolt and seal from repco or automotive related shop? What should I be looking for and checking? Ie what if its the thread itself ? and any specific name for this bolt ? should i top up the oil ? does it need to be flushed somehow etc ?


Second of all what is the square shaped object that soaked in oil ? You can see that its been blowing back onto my exhaust pipe in the left hand side of the second pic. Can anybody explain to me whats leaking, or what may be leaking? And what I can check for and if I can fix any of this myself ? or not..

a fibre washer is all that is needed for teh diff plug
take the plug out and clean up the thread with a rag.


as for the tranny looks like the rear main seal
remove driveshaft
and pull the old seal out
and replace with a new 1 ~$25ish
just tap the new seal in carefully

As said before all you need is a fibre washer for the diff plug or it may just need to be tightend. Now with the leak from the trans its a bit harder fix. Firsly the extension casing seal is leaking, secondly it may have chewed out due to a worn extension casing bush. To check it simply take hold of the front of the drive shaft and move it sideways, there should be very little or no play at all in it. If there is have both the bush and seal relaced, if no or little play just replace the seal.

Dont You Mean Extension Housing Seal. The Rear Main Is the One Between The Block And Trans.

Generally the extension housing seal leaks because the bushes behind it a generally rooted. you can slam a new seal in there but it will just be a band-aid fix. if you want it fixed properly take it to a trans. shop and they'll replace the bushes and ext. housing seal for around $100 bucks
