Hi Guys,
Is the Pinion Bolt left hand or right hand thread? Wife drove over a 6meter log roll of bubble wrap. Thought nothing of it untill I smelt the Stench! Plastic had melted onto the Exhaust and wrapped around the tail shaft. It had melted into a solid plastic casting around the Pinion Seal and oil was already leaking from it. Could not cut into it! Had to use a heat gun to melt it back off. |

Cheers Mark.Tania,
Thanks for looking. It won't budge in either direction and I'm scared I'll stip it or worse, snap it off! |

Yes its right hand thread.
I used to use a box section pipe and drill 2 holes in it for the tail shaft bolts. then use I think from memory a 1-1/16th" socket on a breaker bar or use a rattle gun! before you remove/lossen it mark the bolt and pinion just for reasemmble references (not that it'll be in the exact same spot again) !

It would want to be tight!
and just to recap, what was the socket size? just so I know for the future! And be sure you put on some loctite 272 or somewhat just to be sure! If only you were in melb, I've 2 pinion seals here that have been sitting in the shed for years! and its probably the only thing stopping you from re-assembling! (unless u bought one) cheers Andrew

Hi Krytox,
You were spot on with 1-1/16" Socket and right hand thread. MANY THANKS. Had no access to additional tools, so diff locked with handbrake on and lots of grunt. Picked up the Seal before I started the job (Repco $6.00). Whole job took 3hours including burning off the plastic that had been run over. All is fixed and 200ks have been clocked up with no signs of any leaking - the diff lost every drop of oil. Many thanks again, T.bag |
