hey hey i been reading about the whole lightened flyheel thing. pros and cons etc etc is it worth it or just something for a real race car type of thing and how is it done???????
is it a simple case of getting a flywheel and machining it down a few thou or is there a proceedure..... cheers for any replys i prolley getting a head of myself as i am gettig a flywheel from the orange wreckers god willing and thus gettign it machined does that lighten it or just flatten it....

I'm not sure but I would have thought lightening a flywheel would simply mean replacing it with a flywheel that would be made out of a material which is lighter yet still strong. I couldn't see how shaving a few thou would make it significantly lighter.

buy a lightened flywheel. You can machine them to buggery for the same effect but thats crap
you'll lose torque, but you'll rev to that HUGE 5750rpm limiter (or whatever it is) real fast

I wouldn't try and take off 3-5kgs off your flywheel. Might kinda make it a bit thin!
You can buy the lightened flywheels, they are from 2.5 i think to 4-5kgs lighter. Depending on what one you want. I got a 'normal' yella terra lightened flywheel, when i did my clutch a few months back. It made a little difference, just lets the revs pick up a little quicker, but i'm not really sure if it was worth it or not. I haven't really noticed any loss in torque, and it only spins a fraction quicker than before. Unless you've got the cash to buy a new lightened flywheel, then i'd just machine the one you have. |

ba xr6 turbo flywheels are lighter, around 3-4kg.
and apparently they bolt in too.

Mate bought a lightened flywheel for his Pulsar GTi... Standard flywheel weighed 12.5kg and his weighed 3.5kg... I tell ya, that thing revved hard and fast!

i should add thats for a series 1 with a 5spd gearbox
