Hi All,
I'm looking for budget options for lightweight 17inch rims for an AU (III). My aim is to significantly reduce the unsprung weight on each wheel (does anyone know the standard AU alloy weight anyway?). The appearance of the wheel is less important, but it would still need to suit a falcon (ie. couldn't be too old school in style). Does anyone know of some good options here? Or maybe other performance vehicles that run standard lightweight mags in the same size/offset as ours? So far I've found that in the 'new' lightweight range, 'Rota' seem to be some of the cheapest....eg. $1200ish for a set. Weights vary, but they're generally light (eg. 10kg/wheel in 17inch). I think Koya Drifteks are fair value also. XXR is another budget lightweight new brand. Regarding wheels which fit AU's off other vehicles (2nd hand), I think the EVO and Sti rims are often simliar size/PCD/Offset, but have seen some variation in this. I think rims that fit Nissan 200sx should fit too. Has anyone researched or found some lightweight wheel options at reasonable cost? Anyone running a set that they're happy with? Cheers, Joe PS I've searched this in detail...there's stuff on lightweight rims, but nothing very specific to the AU-FG's.

Skyline, Supra, pretty much anything jap is 5 x 114.3 and a very similar offset. You could go a 17 x 8 on the front in a +35, and a +18 17x9.5 on the rear.

Generally most of the Jap aftermarket stuff is pretty light, especially compared to OEM rims from Ford, have a look on ebay, its normally flooded with jap rims which will bolt up to your AU - key numbers are what 67RCE said; 5x114.3, offset ~ +35 to + 40 for fronts, +15 to around +40 for rear

Cheers, thanks for those suggestions.
I'll chase up some of those vehicles.

For any interested, here's some updates on this topic:
Quite a few of the wrx sti rims suit the AU-FG falcon offset/pcd. They're made by Enkei and are lightweight. Can be picked up for as little as $600 for a set on the jap forums. Whether they look good on a falcon is another question! XXR make a few lightweight 17/18inch wheels (under 10kg/wheel) in correct offset/pcd/width. They can be had new for under $1K. Again, only some of them look like they could suit falcons. If anyone discovers some other budget lightweight options, new or used OEM (standard wheels for a certain model), please post up. It would be great to have a few options to get unsprung weight down on our vehicles without massive cost. On another note, anyone know if 8.5 inch rims would work up front on AU's? Joe

Joe Yes, 8.5 will work with a +30 offset. it will push the outer edge of the rim 12ish mm towards the guard, the inner edge will still sit as per standard 17x8's

With the extra 12mm would the 8.5's be likely to scrub tyres on full lock or anything? From what I gather I can still run 235's on 8.5" rims, which would mean the tire would stretch a touch. Also, what offset would I need to run on 8.5" rims to get the back pair to come out 12mm, like the fronts? Thanks again for the tips! Here's some info on a couple of XXR rims, to give an idea: XXR518 17x8.5 +35 - $885 - 9.5kg's each wheel XXR522 17x8 +35 - $895 - 9.2kg's each wheel These prices are delivered...pretty cheap for a lightish rim to your door!

Factory offset is +36.5, by Increasing wheel width 1/2" (12.5mm) and decreasing offset by 6mm to +30, you push the outer edge of the wheel out 12mm. If you want to push the rear out further, increasing track, you would need to move closer to a 0 offset.

Cheers, thats a great explanation. Was a silly question in hindsight, as all 4 standard wheels run same +35ish offset front to back...so of course the +30 offset you mentioned would give the same result on the back wheels.
So I take it the extra 12mm on the front 8.5" rims shouldn't cause scrubbing?

CAT600 on AFF has 9's on the front. You may need to roll the inner edge of the wheel arch.

Thanks, I might stick with 8" in this case. The rims are lighter anyway which is the main objective.

For weight comparison, so far I've found that Ford 18x8 rims (BA) weigh 14.5kg. I'd expect the 17x8's to weigh approx. 14kg in this case (to be confirmed).
So a 9-10 kg rim substitute for our standard mags would remove approx. 16-20kg off overall vehicle weight, and 4-5kg of unsprung weight from each corner. I think there should be a tangible performance/handling improvement with that weight difference. Joe

Update - I've bought some mazdaspeed ms-01 mags, from a series V (I think RX7). They're same pcd, diamater and +34 offset. Fronts are 8inch, rears are 9inch.
They're made by Rays Engineering, and weigh approx. 9kg each. The AU 17's by comparison weigh approx. 13.5kg I'm told (still haven't weighed them myself). Styling suitability is a subjective thing, but I'm keen to put them on and see if the weight difference has any noticeable effect. Just have to drill out the stud holes as the RX7's must run slightly thinner studs than falcons. For any looking for something similar, try wheels off RX7's, 200sx, some skylines, some wrx Sti's and some Mitsubishi EV0s. A lot of the jap/drift enthusiasts go for some odd offsets that may not normally suit their car, but could work on yours. Will update later once they're fitted. Joe
