can someone explain to me what the difference is between a
locka 4wd diff with lsd centre & a standard lsd.

what will a locka diff do for me that ya normal lsd wont!
and what are the pros & cons of either brand. i am purchasing a lsd later in the year & am open to suggestions . on another thread someone mentions that the locka diff is the closest legal diff to the mini spool. so what does all that do for my car.
and where does one go to get a locka fitted. :D

A Lokka is a mechanical centre. Under load it locks the rear axles together to drive evenly. A limited slip does not lock, but has a different tolerance to how it reduces wheelspin

there is no locking diff that still retains the LSD function. (aside from a german? made unit that used magnets to apply extra pressure on an lsd clutch pack, though it proved weak and still slipped when used in tough 4x4 conditions)

there are also a number of different locking diffs.

ARB and TJM both in cab AIR operated diff locks, each of them work differently but basicly use compressed air to operate the lock. these are a two position device and are either open or locked.
The McNamara locker is similar to a the TJM locker.

You then have 'Auto lockers' like the Locright and the 4x4 systems Locker
Which basicly do the same thing as a Detroit locker. When power is applied they will lock, if there is no power being applied they will allow each rear wheel to travel Independently.

And LSD will never mechanically 'lock' through what ever clutch design the LSD has it will 'help' to transfer torque to the wheel with less grip. But to go through every type of LSD would be an article in its self.

100000x better then the best LSD.
Now I have one in a road car I wont be going back to an LSD in a hurry.

ok lockrights sound good ! but going from your original diff to the lockright ! was it an imediately noticible difference and if yes in what way was it better.
if i was to go out 2moro say to purchase one where would i go eg: 4wd shop like arb !
i need to know what to expect at the installers !
being that my diff is the s**t stock 3.08 standard diff as supplied as new on my 4ltr auto ( au ) ! do i have to fit a second hand xr6 or xr8 diff from rotor to rotor before getting a lockright fitted. do i still need to fit the 3.71 lsd centre i had plans on at xmas.
is it only the centre of ya diff that is replaced. how does it all work. :shock:

Big difference in traction. You have to source it from 4wd systems in South Australia, basically your existing open centre gets stripped and the lockright sits inside that. You do not need an XR diff to fit one.

A Lokka will not fit in a LSD centre... They are a different shape to an open centre, and as such the Lokka will only fit in open centres...

I have one and haven't fitted it yet (waiting on the return of the old man's diff spreader), however these are great... They can be fitted by any mechanically minded person, as long as you take the diff apart and put every piece back exactly where it came from (ie don't mix the shims and caps up) then the crown and pinion mesh pattern will not change...

You remove the centre, unbolt the two halves and pull out the spider assembly, insert the Lokka, take some measurements to make sure it'll unlock (basically that the shims inside the centre aren't too fat or too thin) and bolt the two halves together again and re fit your diff housing...

If you keep the same ratio you will not have to reset the preload, face/flank, and heel/toe measurements, if you change gears you will need to set all these again...

I'm keeping my current ratio (keeps it fuel efficient at 100km/hr, not too many revs) so it should be (fingers crossed) a fairly simple job for me to do...

I'll post up pics of it shortly...

To explain how it works here some pics...

Ok...

You have to picture this to understand...
Tail shaft drives pinion -> pinion drives crown wheel -> crown wheel drives centre housing -> centre housing drives cross shafts -> cross shafts drive Lokka

Now when you see thisI have compressed the springs (using an aerosol can) and this is how it resides inside the diff when under no drive

Now when you gun it the cross shafts turn into the inner gears and work like cams forcing the inner gears to mesh with the outer gears locking the wheels together...

When you back off and corner the Lokka drives the inside wheel (unlike a conventional SS) and allows the outer wheel to over-speed... A Lokka while never allow a wheel to under-speed only over-speed...

You have no drive and the traction combine with speed difference of the wheels allows this gadget to do this:

therefore one wheel (inner wheel) remains locked and the other unlocks and shounds like a ratchet when these gears slip over each other...

This is my understanding of it anyway... I'll find out what its like when I get it in...

Your pretty much spot on Tim, but when you corner under full throttle or load, it stays locked on both wheels, so you will either have the inside wheel skip or you will have a slide happening

so timmy looks like i dont need the lsd anymore! ! if purchasing a locka diff ;
can you still pick a locka diff ratio" similar" to a 3.71 lsd for that off the line punch !
i hope there is somewere in sydney that sells and installs these as i cant wait.
also whats the approx/ price if anyone knows to purchase and get this fitted from a diff joint.
oh yeah! whats the best type !

apparently (I haven't got mine fitted) with the new springs the ratchet noise is nearly non existent and the life expectancy from their website is twice the life of a diff of at least 500,000km...

The Lokka goes inside the carrier and as such you can bolt whatever ratio gear to the carrier that suit you...

The diff place in wagga quote me around $400 to have this fitted which is a bloody joke... I'll attempt it myself for that price...

I'd send them some pics and the instructions and say I want it installed and the ratio changed so how much...

Just be aware that when you change your ratio that their is a fair bit of time involved in setting the preload, backlash, face/flank and heel/toe up... You be up for quite a few hours I'd reckon there... Esp if they install the pinion with the shims it says and it turns out to be wrong and they have to remove it again as the colapsable washer in it can only be used once so your up for another new one if it ends up wrong and more time to set the pinion preload again...

If you can get away with already set up gears (I'm just gonna run with the 3.27 that are in the diff already) then its much cheaper and you'd near be able to install yourself...

They are supplied from a South Australian Company and you'd be better to get onto them and leave out the middle man...

Ok my understanding of following:
*Detroit, not practical for street use, hard to get to unlock, lots of parts and very complicated, more bits to wear out, physically very large (made for 9" diffs)
*Air Locker, Would be expensive and not very common and I've never seen one for the std Borg Warner Falcon Diff
*Lokka, small, simple, easily unlocks, very few parts, relatively cheap, fits into existing diff...

the racheting noise is easily avoided, a mate has a Lokka that has copped hell for over 5 years and is still going strong! Another mate killed one after 10yrs, in a 600+hp big block Jeep. Any reasonable diff shop can install them. They can also be installed in anything from a 2.92-4.11 diff.
