hey guys i got a 97 auto el mont and the shifter is very loose, it changes gears just fine, no thumps or clangs when changing, but when you use the shifter it is very loose. just wondering if there is a bolt or something that tightens it back up again.
any advice is good cheers

hi, there is a nut at the bottom of the shaft on the inside which tightens it up, can also be loose underneath the car too.
remove the tbar surround and look at the bottom of the shaft, think its a 17mm head iirc |

It wont be a loose bolt, you need to remove the complete shifter assembly and make a bush to stop the shaft on the end of the shifter handle wobbling round in the hole. That is the looseness you can feel.
I just removed the shifter handle from the shifter body and wrapped a piece of aluminium can around the shaft to take up the slack( works like a shim or bush setup). I got the length of the aluminium strip just the right length until the handle is nice and snug and then all the wobbly shifter days are over.
