my old diff was chattering for a while i brought a used 4 pinion 28 spline lsd center for my ef, the cones where about 4mm aprox from the bottom of the housing i though this was good, any way i took it to a diff joint to get the diff rebuilt rebuilt and the center installed.
the bloke at the diff joint said i might aswell get the diff center machined and new cones installed and he will shim it up tight, he said if i was going to spend this much money i might aswell do it now saves me doing it lafter sounds fair i thought. any way half a day later and a empty wallet i drove the car 70 km home on the last corner to my street the diff made a couple of funny sounds and then pulling into my drive way there was some loud clunks and bangs from the rear end, i near on s**t myself after forking out over 1g. i tryed to ring the diff shop no joy so i got a lft to work for a few days then i took a day off work and drove down there, i told the bloke what was up, not to intresed realy, he took it for a drive and it was still hopping in the car parks and acting like a locker he said it was fine and put some fully sinthetic oil in it and told me to change the oil in 20k, i seen metal come out of the diff while changing oil... but a short time later i ment less then 2 months in the rain i noticed the diff was acting like a single pegger, i tryed calling the diff joint with no joy, i was to flat out at work to take the car in any way a few good months + passed and as you guess the diff is no better even on a gravel drive way it acts like a single spinner. i changed the oil the other day and it came out like silver and shinny i was thinking great for the diff and new bearings the diff only traveled less 10 000 k,s we do alot of high way and some times for work its a 300 kmh round trip, and i can say there has been no lsd action for well over 50% of that, the diff has not been working like it should and its never been worked hard, its driven to work and back and my wife drives it more then me if ive realy honest its done 2 small mild figer 8,s on a private propertyim only running 225 16 inch rubber. any way thats enough dripple, my whole point of this thread is i realy un happy to pay all that one for less then a couple of months use out of the lsd, i know the cone lsd are not the best, but hey new cones machined shimmed housing you would think youll get more run time, so ive been looking for some info on changing the lsd cones my self, mark the diff position pull it out pull it apart and replace the cones and put it back int he same position with the same shims, so can it be done and how hard is it, im not keen to hand over another silly sum of coin for another rebuld p,s im better at mechanical stuff then typing lols and its a familym car, im not keen on lokka,s and spool,s been there and done that when i was a bit younger, good fun but not for the wife and kids |

have you looked in a workshop manual, might have a few pictures etc
to my knowledge you need a few specialist tools to do the job, a diff spreader is one thing that comes to mind. it spreads the area where the centre drops into so it wont damage the bearings removing/installing them. then again a few mates have pulled their centres out to weld them up and replaced them without any dramas. maybe ring the department of consumer affairs and tell them the story, they have helped me out a couple of times when people have sold me stuff that wouldnt work, i got my money back. maybe just save for a kaaz, lockrite or other these guys sell a cheapish conversion http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/index.php?id=57 |
