I have just installed my 3.45 LSD from an EL XR8 and I am concerned about the amount of noise it is making. There appears to be a whine that relates to speed not loading, it seems to peak around 80K's. The guy said that it had been sitting for a while but only has 100000ks on it. I suspect the internals may be a bit rusted as the oil when drained appear brown and frothy after a short spin on the jacks. I then replaced both axles with my ones which have almost new bearings and the whine reduced but not eliminated  . My previous EF LSD wagon did not make this noise.

Is it worth throwing in some Nulon or any other additive or will a bit more K's help?

Whats your tooth contact like? Are you sure that you put the hemisphere shims back in thier correct spots? Backlash will give you a good idea as to wether its right or not, failing that I would guess that its the hemi bearings, did you put the right cups back on thier cones? Were the hemi shims hard to put back in, or did they slip back in?

Thanks Jaysen, it is not recoed nor has it ever been, it was obtained as a complete assembly axle to axle.

I did a search and this one seems like the standard reply to this problem..

That is what I put in when I changed it.

Mines does the same thing...very VERY annoying...has done it for months...also sometimes hear a creaking/groaning nose from it when turning slowly, ie when parking...
has a case of the clunks aswell so I'm guessing its shot...about to take it to Mr diff repairer, see how much I'll be robbed...

A visit to a diff specialist today and he says the bearings are shagged. Looks like it was not a bargain after all. What is the going rate for a set of bearings without the labour in removing and installing it in the car?

Thinking about it I can probably replace the bearings and may even be able to set it up if the gregories procedure is workable. Do many people do this them selfs?

bearing kit for the 4 centre bearings will set you back around $120 including the seal. I havnt priced the axle bearings however I would guess around $50-60. They are easy to change, just a bit of gentle grinding untill they drop off the axles/hemisphere/pinion, just be sure not to nick anything else but the bearings. If you can press them, then have fun with that!! The trick will be that when you re install the kit, you will then have to re shim to get your preloads right, another fun job

Sounds promising, what is in the KIT? Is it the two carrier and two pinion bearings , the spacer and seal? I am assuming the center internals are fine.
Looking at the car manual I have, Max Ellery recons I need a Carrier Spreader to get the center out and then goes on to state not to spread it by more than 0.5mm, can someone explain why this is necessary.

Looks like I might tackle this, the quotes I can get is $740 - $880 and parts come in at less than $150. Some questions before I start.

The pinion bearing preload is determined by the pinion spacer which is a use once part. If I need to adjust the pinion depth can I just reassemble with the now used spacer or do I need another?

Where do I get gear making compound to check teeth meshing?

Once I have installed the bearings can I tell if all is well purely by looking at the teeth meshing pattern left on the gears coated with gear making compound and a dial gauge check of backlash on the crown wheel?
