I'm looking at putting an m86 in my 6cyl, 4 speed auto fairmont ghia and I'm not quite sure what is involved in the conversion. I know I will need a different drive shaft to mate up with the new diff but I'm not sure if I can run it with the same axles and independant rear suspension. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You'll need the entire rear assembly plus tailshaft to suit. It's expensive to convert to M86, but apparently the amount of traction it can hold is great for N/A builds.

So is there any way I can keep the IRS and go to an m86? Didn't some of the typhoons have IRS and an m86? If not what would be the cheapest way to swap my current setup to an LSD with 3.93 or 4.11 diff ratio.

Well how much power you want to make? Are you keeping the car N/A?
If so, just get an XR6 LSD from ba/bf. Find a transmission joint that will tighten the LSD, new bearings and oils and also fit some AU 3.9's or 4.11's with shim. Will cost you about $200-$300 for a secondhand XR6 LSD, and then another $1800 drive in - drive out to have it fitted etc.

I'm keeping it pretty mild for now but still want to be able to enjoy it. I won't be turboing it at the moment (P plater), It only has extractors, hi flow cat, 2.5 redback exhaust, f6 air box and territory intake pipe and will probably get chipped and tuned soon. I think a 3.93 or 4:11 LSD should wake it up a bit.
I'll look into a bit more. What options do I have with just changing the centre over to an LSD and keeping the rest of the rear end the way it is? |

I've been looking into it and I'm pretty sure 28 spline commodores (around vl, vn) and skyline's diff centers will fit. Am I correct in thinking If I could find a good condition one of those I could get away with whacking it in?

just ask out resident expert : Dazmonster.
he will quickly tell you. then he will continue to tell you you are a in expirienced young dumb shlt with no idea about anything, also he will rattle off different cars he has owned. after this he will continue by rambling about part numbers and engine block numbers. then he continue off about how different shades of colours can reflect off trees, how shadows can be manipulated and spoken to before losing you in a random babble of nonsense before taking his happy pills ang going to bed.

Yea I know a few people like that haha. I am pretty inexperienced with cars but keen to learn.
I'm thinking now that if I find an AU LSD centre and 3.89 diff gears that would be the go. Not sure what to do really haha. |

Mate, as far as I know, the diffs from the commodores won't work. What I do know is that it's next to impossible to get diff gears for the BA-BF M78 Diff. You can buy brand new LSD centres which can go into your carrier no problems, but it will still cost you a bit to have installed. You're just better off finding a reco'd AU IRS LSD that already has the 3.89 or 4.11 diff gears installed. This will save you hassles lol
You can't just swap the centre from an M86 into the M78 as they are a 30 spline, while M78 is 28. Just wouldn't fit. You can find entire rear assemblies fairly cheap on ebay at the moment.

Well as far as I know some of the commodores used 28 spline m78 Borg Warner diffs. What makes you say they won't fit?

I'm just assuming the centre won't fit into the carrier, but don't take my word for it mate. I know the gears will, but will need shimming. Like you mentioned, you're best best option is an AU IRS LSD as they use the same gears as the E Series, and they're easily found for cheap. Also the AU IRS LSD is stronger than the B Series, due to using 4 piston, rather than 2 piston like the B's.
