Hey,

I am doing a manual conversion in my Fairmont in 2 weeks, and am wondering if there will be any problems with the cruise control afterwards.

I know that when I did the clutch in my XR8 the first time I had problems with the cruise afterwards (needed some switch adjusted that connected to the clutch pedal)

Any suggestions to make sure I dont have any problems, or tips to make sure everything runs smoothly would be great - as I am only taking 4 days off from work, and am driving up to sydney to get this done.

What Model Fairmont?
If its an E-series, I have a spare Clutch switch fully adjustable with thread.
also has connection to connet to the 'terminated' plug that all cruise equipped auto's have.

take it or leave it... and if anyone else wants it and are local come get it :P

How much do you want for it, including postage?

I did the Conversion myself. The only thing is that switch. Simple to wire in but I still havent put the switch in and its going really well. Just gotta rember to either press the brake or hit my coast/resume button. If you just push the clutch, it revs up!

Oh yea! If you havent got the manual ECU, get the resistors! Also, if it starts and blows out black smoke, check your MAP sensor. My VAC hose fell off when I was unbolting the starter motor. Its hard to line up the gear box when the car is on ramps and your trolley jack has 3 wheels!! Dropped it on my knee and that hurts! If u have a work shop manual, that will help Immensly!!

I managed to convert it in 2 days! It would have been one but I forgot the Clutch Pedal Cable Clevis! That Was Horrible Coz I was So Desperate To Take It For A Spin!!! Then I had the MAP sensor problem which took Days to find! That was a pain! Also, make sure you get the spigot bearing. $19.50 from your local Ford dealer and they should have some in stock. Its a very straight foward conversion just a little awkward to get to some of the bolts! Oh Yea. Dont forget some new tail shaft bolts! MUST BE REPLACED!

If I think of anything else, I will post!

Cheers

Wade

Wadesta - I have bought a manual EB wagon, and was planning on swapping everything over - so will I need the spigot bearing and tailshaft bolts? (cant I just use the ones from the other car)

I wont be putting the manual ECU in, as its not an XR6 ecu, but was told mine will work fine.

The Manuals have two clutch pedal switches, one on the brake and the other on clutch, they are the same switch. Theres a double adaptor type wiring that connects the two together, and the vacuum line also connects to both.

But since you've got a manual car to swap everything you'll already have all this.

I was just about to reply with "I dont think the manual wagon has cruise control", but I just looked at the specs, and it does.

So I guess - it pretty much should be easy peasy (well - not for me - for my mate who is doing the conversion for me)

I done the conversion and sometimes you can become complacent with the fact that you are now driving a manual and still using the cruise control. Found out the hard way a couple of times when I have forgotten I have the cruise control set and then try and change gears!!!! Very funny if you have passengers in the car

You really will need a new spigot and tailshaft bolts.

Tailshaft bolts are coated in a special thread lock and for that reason, you need new ones, otherwise you run the risk of dropping a tailshaft! And well, if you replace all of your bearings while your there, it will save you a heap of trouble in a couple of weeks! Also, If your budget allows for it, put in a EL clutch and flywheel. Alot smoother than the EA-EB-ED

There not that hard to take out. A Bit of grease forced into the centre of the bearing will hydraulicily pull it out but for the sake of $19.50, your better off replacing it for peace of mind!

Nah - EL Clutch is way too soft.

Apparently the clutch in it at the moment, is a good aftermarket one, but if I hate it - I will get Mal Wood to do a custom job for me, like the one on my XR8 (most people think its a button clutch, but there is a tiny tiny amount of pick up in - just the way I like it)
