Did an oil change on the T5 yesterday. Where the drain and filler plugs screw into the housing there is no obvious sealing faces. It seems you have to use something to seal the plugs in the housing.
When I pulled them out I did the usual of cleaning the threads and the first few had something like loctite thread sealer on there so I left it. The Factory manual says to use teflon tape on it. What do you guys generally use to seal the drain and filler plugs on the T5 gearbox? |

I drained and refilled mine about 12 months ago - I don't recall any sealer or loctite on mine. I degreased the area and checked weekly for a couple weeks, but no leaks, that's still the case now.
I doubt you'll have a leak issue, the loctite will be most likely for locking rather than sealing purposes. Not that you can add teflon tape or loctite without draining the box again. Don't forget to add the Lubrizol.

Dont need Lubrizol. I dont use ATF in the box. I used Penrite Manual Gear Oil 75.
If I put teflon tape on the drain plug I'd have to fill it again unless I used my finger to plug while my other hand magically put tape on the plug by itself

generally the drain plugs dont need any sealer as the threads are tapered so the more you do them up the tighter the seal.. but if your conserned you can put a little gasket silicone on the thread . it couldnt hurt.... |

NOOOOO. Not silicone. Why do people use silicone. Quick fact. Silicone expands in hot oil. As a general rule, you never, EVER use silicone near oil because if you accidentally get some silicone in the gearbox, it can get into oil lines, expand and black them up. So yes, it could hurt a lot. |

You don't need to use anything.
I used the Redline Heavy Shockproof gear oil.

WHERE in Nowra can I buy some ?? lol I havent been able to find it! I changed the tranny fluid to Castrol Transmax-Z a few months ago but couldnt find Lubrizol...any idea? Oh and I have never used anything to seal the plug, and never had any leaks... |
