Hi all
I wish to convert a 5 speed EB1 3.9 to auto. Would the simplest option be to install a 3 speed and change the engine ecu to suit? I believe the 4 speeds require the trannie ecu and other changes, is that about right.
cheers

Not quite right Josh, EA 2 and possibly EB1 got a trans ECU

F**k lol

Probably better off leaving it manual

I didn't know that, might make finding the parts required a little hard?

car is basically a crappy daily work vehicle, has just done a clutch, thought it might be easier to whack an auto in it. Sick of changing gears anyway. Its CFI, I do have a spare ecu but its for a 4 speed ea2 apparently

You should be able to put a 3 speed auto into the car without changing the ECU since the 3 speed was hydraulic. It'll require more mucking around if you want to get a 4 speed and putting in a separate auto ecu.

3 speed auto has a kick down cable - so make sure you get one that suits (was it CPI) with the right levers/brackets. The MPI car had a funny lever arrangement from memory

Or you sell it to someone that wants a manual and buy a factory auto, for like $100.

thanks for the input, I have decided to do the clutch myself after quotes between 700-950, more than the car is worth, the only wrecker i could find with a 3 speed auto wanted 440 bucks !!!! ( i thought they would nearly be a scrap item)cheap clutch kit 175 delivered, and i guess about 50 bucks for flywheel machining
thanks again
