Looking to fit pwr Rack & pinion steering into my Mk1 Cortina. i've been told Camira rack will work. I also have a pwr rack from a 1992 Laser which looks about right???
has anyone done this before?
Cheers

Hi, i have a MKII cortina with a escort (manual) rack fitted, i would suggest a couple of things:

1 - DONT. its almost impossible to get rack and pinion in an early cortina and engineered for a price that isnt totally insane. if the car is already rego'ed its OK but you will have a harder time selling it.

2 - MK2 escort stuff is an almost match for the early cortina's so look at that gear instead. mid 70's volvo 240 (manual rack) ends will bolt of to an escort rack and rod ends (but are much longer) and escort adjustable TCA's can be used to get the track width right again. use the escort uprights and you get a brake upgrade as well. properly done this should be worlds ahead of the old setup

3 - you can keep the old uprights and most the steering if you can make a camira/daewoo center steer rack fit. BUT the old geometry and bump steer problems will still be present (or possibly worse)

hey thanks,
is the escort rack front mounted? if so, what would you do about the steering arms. would you swap side to side??

escort rack is front mounted, i would suggest using the entire escort front suspension. if you can get near an escort with a tape measure you will see that some of the important dimensions are very close.

if you are keen on keeping the standard struts and drag link stuff a center steer rack like from a camira makes more sense as it will work with the original steering better (like an RRS kit)
